Why waste a late round pick on a QB?

On a project QB when we have one in Matt Baker?

Since we already have a year invested in him, why start over with some other late round guy?

If they see one who appears to have more talent, I am sure they will pull the trigger.

why not? what do we have to lose? is not as if Matt Baker set the world on fire in college or last year on the PS.

I agree with what's been said. Baker was practice squad last year I'd think a 4th round pick at QB could be a better option, we can't expect to find Tony Romos everytime we pick up a undrafted rookie free agent QB, that'd be crazy.

For the simple reason I don't want to waste another 10 years trying to find Tony's replacement if and when that's necessary.

why? because QBs are hot commodities..sort of like what we did with steve walsh.. sure we had troy aikman but we drafted steve walsh highly to have a back up plan and then when we saw troy aikman worked out we traded him a bunch of picks.. QBs are always in need in the NFL so you should always try and groom one either to keep or to trade.. its just a smart investment

We should draft a QB on day 2 every year. Period.

That would not ever be a wasted pick. Day 2 guys surprise every year. I would rather be in a position of having 2 good QB's than one good QB who is a injury away from killing your season.

I've always said...... you are a very wise man. ;)

We don't need projects. We need able backups.

I wonder if the Pats asked themselves the same question when they took Tom Brady in the 6th round.

we may be drafting a QB

but it might not be with a late rd pick

right now I'd bet we end up using a middle rd pick (3rd, 4th or 5th) on a 3rd QB

That would be fine w/me. Let's get another young talent on the roster and start grooming him.

I said project because I thought Brad Johnson was the backup. In a few years once he leaves one of the "projects" can becomes the backup.

Isn't that why they are called "projects"?

For the same reason Green Bay drafted guys Like Brunell, Hasselbeck, and Brooks: 'cause you never know.

The actual answer is because it is never wise to wait until you are without a QB to get a new one.

Same as you would like to have more than 1 quality player at a position, you want the same with QB.

I get what you're saying but, there's only so many QB's we can carry. Tony and Brad have their spots. So are we gonna drop Matt Baker without seeing much of him in Training Camp/Pre-Season just to make way for another guy.

Would we carry four QB's? Is that really realistic with the amount of defensive personnel the 3-4 uses.

All i'm saying is let Baker show what he can do in TC and Pre Season. If he doesn't show signs of improvement, replace him with a 3-4th round QB in next year's draft.

Carry baker or the rookie on the practice squad. If Baker couldn't earn a roster spot, I doubt that he is even considered much of a 'project.'

I repeat, we don't need projects right now, we need backups. Plural.

So we can basically keep baker on the practice squad and draft a replacement, what's his face johnson is good for maybe 1 year...:starspin
