Why would ESPN pay Witten 4 million?

Tony Romo, still making Witten big money.

Networks are trying to copycat the Tony Romo broadcast success. A fad this year. I don't expect it to continue. Witten should jump on the chances available this year.
I think the fad will continue until someone craps the bed and ruins it. If the Witten deal happens and he does well for ESPN, of course it continues. Guys like Tom Brady and Drew Brees will be retiring soon and walking into contracts that make $4M sound like chump change.

Even Eli might have huge money waiting for him. He’s a doofus, sure, but he showed he can play into that with his SNL appearance. He’s gonna be like another Terry Bradshaw, basically. He’ll be a doofus cartoon.

Aledgidley they showed some audiences the tapes of the prospected announcers and Witten won in a landslide.

I loved Gruden. He brought fire and obvious passion for the game.

Oh actually I don’t mind him, but...every week...RB X is the best at blocking...next eeek...RB X is the best at blocking....
So was just making a joke about it.

According to this article another network has made Witten an offer? Could it be NBC Sunday Night Football? Interesting story.

The question is: WHY IS HE STILL THINKING ABOUT IT?

He is being offered $4 million to appear on TV once a week. He gets to spend more time with his family. Avoid training camp, potential injuries, etc. It is a no brainer. He should have said yes right away. I don't know what he is waiting for.

Players are rarely ready to hang up their cleats unless they aren’t wanted.

I actually don't know what the answer to this is, but: does a non-regional broadcaster actually spend more time with their family than a player?

What does the actual work and travel schedule of a MNF commentator look like?

I mean, I know he won't have the same long workdays between all the workouts and the filmstudy and position meetings. But, assuming his family lives in the Dallas area (and maybe they don't, maybe they live in Tennessee or somewhere, I dunno where he calls home), he's at least staying in town for half of the season when he's a player. Working for a non-regional media outfit (not covering only Dallas games, in other words, where his travel schedule would mirror the schedule of the team he covers regionally), he'll be gone to a new city, traveling *every* week.

I assume he'd see the kids a little more during the weekdays and 50% less on the weekends.

A lot like Mayock at the draft, by the time he finishes talking about that 7th rounder you wonder why he wasn't the 1st pick of the draft.....

I thought we were supposed to have a decision today? Waiting to find out is not fun.

Why would you assume NBC, they're doing better than the others in the ratings. Personally, Witten would not be an upgrade over Collinsworth for me, he does his homework and I think he does a good job.

I would think it might be CBS because Romo might have used a little influence there. I could pick 4 spots he could do on the CBS pregame, the lamest pregame in NFL history. I think they should kick Simms out and put in Witten just to have the Giant borenerd replaced again by a Cowboy. That had to hurt, Romo getting all that praise after replacing him.
Good point. Romo could be colluding with CBS on Wittens behalf.

I was just thinking that both the#1 slots on CBS and Fox were filled so only the NBC slot would be higher paying than ESPN. Collinsworth to me seems more replaceable.

But being on the pregame panel with CBS does appear a likely place for him if he wasn’t being offered a Color spot. I’m just speculating .

It’s hard to walk away from what you’ve done your whole life. From what you dreamed of as a kid. From the competition and times with your team mates
Many athlete struggle with walking away, he just happens to be one of the few who has the ability to keep making that kind of money

They'll try it with a few more guys, they will be meh, and the networks will move on.

Tony managed to set the world on fire in his rookie year. Again. I don't see a lot of guys living up to that expectation. Witten will be doing great if he's as good as the Moose in a few years.

Witten is announcing his retirement via press conference tomorrow (Thursday) per the same source that's been dead on in the past

lets see if he finally gets one wrong

flame on!

I talked to Miles Austin the other day. He told me he had spoke to a witten earlier that day it’s NBC that is offering a good offer to Jason to where he can play this season and right after the season he has a job with NBC.
