Wide Receiver as a Top Priority?

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not at all claiming that WR is the top priority, but could be a position we're not closed-minded in considering high. My reasoning:

Scott Linehan's hiring shows us that we will be throwing the ball a ton (like it or not), and maintaining a talented stash of receiving weapons is therefore vital. If we decide to let Miles go, we've got a depth chart looking like this:

Outside WR's: 1) Dez; 2) T-Will; 3) Harris
Slot WR's: 1) Beasley; 2) Harris

Practice squad guys aside, we're hurting for numbers and depth/quality. We will be so passing game dependent that the need for a good/great WR unit is even more important to us than most other teams.

Again, not at all saying I'd prioritize a WR over DT/DE/FS. What I'm saying is I think it's a possibility that if the right WR prospect were hanging around in the 2nd or 3rd round, I wouldn't be surprised if we went for it.

WR in rounds 6 and 7. Not higher. You can't win in the NFL with a pass only attack Jerry.

I just don't see using a top 4 pick on a WR with the bigger needs this team has. I understand you don't reach and try and take the BPA, but I think with Dez, TWill, Harris, Beasley, Witten, Escobar and Murray, how many opportunities is a WR going to have? I look at Seattle, San Fran as the blueprint for success....it isn't WR. We need defense, defense, defense and OL.

I'd prefer if we took the Seattle/SF approach, but we're simply not. We've invested a ton in the QB, we hired a pass-heavy play caller, etc. We're seemingly "all in" on throwing the ball, which is the premise of my post.

I don't think the offensive coaches think they can win by just throwing the ball. I'm sure they understand we need to run the ball at times. You're not getting past the issue of having to pass the ball better than your opponent in this league.

Martavis Bryant. 6'4 and runs a 4.3 deep threat and that redzone threat to go with dez

For the most part. Unless your running game and D are far superior. But we've already taken several substantial steps to going the QB/passing game route rather than the run game/D route to glory. That's not at all to say that we shouldn't focus heavily on the D, but if your money is being made passing the ball, I think we need to ensure that the weapons we have in the passing game are high quality.

I actually think that our WR corps is only good, not great. T-Will is still a projection, and has some flaws (lots of promise though), and we lack overall depth as well. I appreciate Harris for what he is and what he does, but he is small with little down-field speed. He's one injury away from lining up on the outside every play.

Another good one alongwith Moncrief that will be available in rounds 3-4. Like him a lot too especially after watching him in the Orange Bowl

I agree wholeheartedly with all of this. You cannot play the running game game unless you are generating + TO diff and your defense is good enough to allow you that luxury. And your offense has to have a high SC% and RZ% otherwise you might win TOP and lose the game.

I think Bryant will go higher but I'd love to see him fall to the 3rd. If so we should be looking hard if he's still there.

Sure, but you can't win consistently much less playoff games.

Lots of ways to win (even in the playoffs). '07 Pats, '08 Steelers and Cardinals, '09 Saints and Colts, '10 Packers, '13 Broncos all enjoyed massive regular season and playoff success and were pass-heavy teams.

Common denominator? Those QB's were: Brady, Roethlisberger, Warner, Brees, Manning (twice) and Rodgers. But my point is that you CAN win with a pass-heavy offense. You just have to do what you do well.

Those teams have solid running games and defenses that stop the run.

Apparently it is for many.

Pass better than your opponent, run effectively, don't make too many negative plays, and at least break even on STs. Generally you win with that formula. Of course the devil is in the details.
