Guaranteed (Bet the Farm on it):

No matter what his signing bonus or cap hit, T.O. will be the #1 WR for the Dallas Cowboys next season.

A close second (Call it 1a):

Our #2 WR starting opposite TO next season is not currently on the roster.

My longshot prediction:

Stanback removes Crayton from the #3 spot during preseason.
(I'm not taking anything away from the stats Crayton put up this season when we really needed him...but he's simply not quick or fast enough to hold down this position for long or to return punts...a good quick 3rd receiver should be open against 3rd CBs and safties most of the time)

They just re-upped Crayton's contract. He's the #3 guy at least. Stanback is a #4 WR and kick or punt returner for now ... at best.

I pray that all these things happen, except I hope Crayton's new contract isn't the only reason he's on the field.

The guy is a good player, but we really do need speed in our WR core through-out, and if Crayton were quick as lightening (like Welker) then I could see him there.

I agree the #2 WR is not currently on the roster. I'm hoping they will fill it through free agency, a rookie WR rarely makes an impact.

However, i doubt that Stanback will clearly out play Crayton as the #3. I just don't think he will be THAT ready for the position. I can see him challenging Crayton but not take his spot.

Crayton, despite his big mouth and his poor performance in the playoff game, is still a better #3 than most #3 WRs in the league.

:starspin I couldn't agree more about your WR comments, and I especially feel you're SO right about our 2# WR for next year currently not being on our roster. As far as Stanback goes replacing Crayton next year, only time will tell on that one. Since Stanback is as raw as he is at the WR spot, I think he's going to have to "really" beat out Crayton hands down before he's given the nodd over Crayton though. At this point, I just don't see Stanback doing that, but...."if"...and I stress the word IF... he has a great training camp and preseson, who knows.

If Crayton is the number 3 WR next year, it won't be because of his contract. I'm predicting that Stanback takes his position, and that has nothing to do with money. The new contract only means you don't cut him, which is fine because he does have value.

You do realize that Bobby Carpenter is one of the highest paid players on the team, right?

Money sometimes keeps you from being cut, but the best players end up on the field.

The way I see it today,

Number 1 WR TO

Number 2 WR FA Acquisition this off-season

Number 3 WR P Crayton

Number 4 WR Stanback (Mostly due to his speed and break away ability)

Number 5 WR Fight between Hurd, Austin, and Draft pick

Number 6 WR Fight between Hurd, Austin and Draft pick

Wow....I definitely don't agree with that statement.

When Terry Glenn was on the field, Crayton still couldn't get open as the #3 guy...he can make some catches against the zone, but he's too easy to cover. If Stanback has a big preseason and makes the kind of plays they said he was making in practice before the injury on the kickoff return, I think he'll get to play plenty of #3 receiver as a guy who can actually make something happen after he gets it in his hands....ala Welker.

I think you'll see Stanback at #2 and Crayton at #3 instead of Crayton being replaced.

What have you seen from Stanback to make you believe that he will be a #2?

Honest question, not trying to be a smart arse.

Good assessment...Stanback over Crayton was my longshot prediction, but with a preseason, it could happen if he makes plays.

I think Austin has a chance to stick due to kick returns and speed to get deep. I think Hurd and Thompson RB have worn the star for the last time. Hurd actually had plenty of opportunities this year...his lack of playmaking will move him off the roster, imo.

Why on earth would you think this?

He's not.

Check out the recap of Jerry's on the ticket today in the DZ.

Are you serious? You really think that Stanback will be that good? I mean I can't argue seeing as how no one saw him really play this year but if he is going to be a number 2 next year I would have though we would have seen him at least a little this year...from all that I have heard about him, which isn't much he was still having trouble with running precise routs. Hope your right and he is good enough to be our #2...

EDIT: Ah now I see the prior post concerning Jerry's comments.

I agree with your predictions Wayne.

My guess is that we'll either start a high-draft pick rookie opposite Owens or a "speed" guy through FA.

I know he's probably the most athletic player on the team outside outside of Ware. But that doesn't mean he'll be a good WR. The coaches and Jerry seem pretty high on him, though, which makes me think he's going to get a role in the starting lineup. Also, Wade recently stated that he doesn't like to draft receivers in the first or something along those lines.

Just reading the tea leaves.

Crayton is #2 next year. He's fine in that role with TO and Witten here. We will have a high pick at WR who will compete for #3 against Hurd.

If Stanback can come in and take Austin's job, we should all be pleased with his performance.

I'll be happy with any improvement over this year, but I think you need to be a little more polished a receiver and route runner to play #1 or #2.

That's why I see Stanback using his athleticism in the slot as the #3...that's where you want a guy catching more short, quick passes and using his elusiveness to make a big play....jmo.

I think you put your speed on the outside and Stanback in the slot means Crayton on the outside. Crayton is money in the slot.

Wayne your a smart man. Which of our WRs outside of TO is guy that can make defenders miss and get 15 extra yards. NONE OF THEM. We have to many "catch the ball and eat dirt WRs"! Need more wiggle in our WR corp, that can actually shake a DB and scare someone.

here's what i would do.

keep TO at #1, Crayton at #2, Hurd/Austin/Stanback battle for #3. sounds familiar doesn't it? yea you gotta risk having an injury to TO.

then i'd sign a veteran FA WR that's cheap. there always seems to be plenty around. hoping for andre davis. but dennis northcutt did ok, despite the patriots game. too bad quincy didn't work out.

then hope fitzgerald roy or chad become UDFA. and possibly replace TO with them. or sign them alongside TO. the problem is those guys could possible earn more than TO's $10m/yr. I'd think this would cause huge problems with TO.
