Care to link to these "reports?" I'll wait.

I think I've read mixed reports as well. One was from Bryan Broadus (which I presume you can still find at the official site). The other I think was from one of the scouting services. But frankly I haven't paid much attention since they're mixed. The question of course is how he'll do in OUR system with what he's asked to do.

Look at the cap room we had and you can figure it was a pretty cheap signing. If the guy was all upside with no warts I doubt you'd sign him for cheap.

That said I do agree its a good signing for us. We need some competition & depth at LB and this guy looks like a good candidate. And maybe he'll be good enough to start and be pulled when we go nickel.

Assuming Sims doesn't win a starting job, he's more of a WLB and Albright is more of a SLB. Also, Caleb McSurdy.. not McShurdy, is his name. I like him or Lemon to make the team though.
They already lost the rights to Lemon I think, and, no that we are switching to cover 2, I bet McSurdy is gone as well. Both those guys were 34 MLBs, not right for this defense.

In fact, I woudln't be surprised if Wilbur is gone as well.

Well if you take two seconds to look in the 'News Zone' you can find one of them yourself from our own Bryan Broaddus.

I thought he was just a FA this year? Could be wrong.. i always liked the way the guy played when he got oppertunities though.
He's only a second year player. They had his rights but let them go. Kiffin most likely felt he didn't fit his defence. His posted 40 time is 4.95 and Kiffin wants a defense full of guys that can run. Very similar to Jimmy Johnson in philosophy.

True enough. Im still not sure im a fan of this transition, but if its going to allow us to get more pressure on the passer this year then it'll be worth it.

I actually think the biggest difference is going to be in coverage. We now will have LBs who are going to be smaller and more agile and thus more adept at coverage rather than the bigger, longer guys who can take on OL and rush the passer. Bruce Carter was a bit of a rarity in a guy who weighs 240 pounds but can run under 4.5. All our other LBs ran in the 4.7 range or worse. Now we are getting a bunch of guys who run in the 4.5s and who can drop back in coverage and get in the passing lanes and run with RBs and TEs down the field.

In the modern passing game there is now so much emphasis in attacking the middle of the field with WRs and getting mismatches with athletic TEs and RBs on LBs that there is a huge call for more athletic LBs. This necessitates switching to a 3-4 scheme for the most part because it is tough to find LBs that are big and physical enough for the 3-4 but quick and fast enough for the coverage responsibilities they are given.

I do think our defense will be much improved so long as the Safety spot is not a horrible mess.

Good post. I also think Sims is a Will. I believe Albright can play Sam and Mike. I don't know about McSurdy.

I agree with this assessment. As it stands...

Ware -- Rat -- Hatcher -- Spencer
Wilbur -- Liss/Bass -- Crawford/Price -- Crawford

Carter -- Lee -- Durant
Albright -- Mcshurdy -- Sims

Something like that at least.

That's possible, although I'm not counting out Wilber or Albright at SLB. I think we just want to have enough options so we can actually put the best player at the position instead of just whoever we've got.

I do think there's some position flexibility with Albright, Wilber, Hatcher and Crawford that could help out with the defensive end rotation.

I also see Sims more as a backup WLB, and Albright more as a backup SLB or even MLB, but I'm sure the backups will get tried at each spot to see where they fit best.

I think WIlber is more of a LDE, but he'll need to bulk up.
He was good against the run and a decent passrusher at Wake Forest.

Thoughts on Wilbur as a backup for DWare at DE? Good fit there?

Bryan Broaddus
Sounds like that are going to let Wilber and Durant battle for that Sam spot with Albright being the swing guy. Was surprised.

Do you mean Albright as the swing guy btwn DE and OLB? our btwn LB spots?

Bryan Broaddus ‏
Sounds like it between DE and LB. I really believed that they would just play him at Sam but just not the case.
