Wilforks respond to the Patriots' tag

Through the Twitter of Vince Wilfork's wife Bianca, the family is responding to the news that the Patriots have franchised their Pro Bowl nose tackle.

Here's the text ...

"In regards to the many calls and emails i am receiving in response to the franchise tag we figured this would be the easiest way to (address this) ...

"The franchise tag has been applied. After six years of dedicated service i do understand this is a business ...

"With that being said it is my hope that the tag is applied for its true purpose ...

"For the purpose of allotting more time for us to continue our talks and be able to reach a long term agreement. ..."

"Only time will tell what the final result will be."

And there you have it.

Where players have a problem with the franchise tag is when teams put it on them with no intention of reaching a long-term deal, but rather getting another year of service out of them without having to commit beyond that. Which seems to be exactly what the Wilforks are guarding against here. So, like Bianca said, time will tell ...

Wow, a level headed response to the tag.

Who'd a thunk it?

I wonder how many edits he went through before sending it out.

I wish the writer had done the same.

Wilforks respond :banghead:

I hope he can live with only 2-3 Bentley's.

When someone complains about getting franchise tagged I hope they get arrested like Plaxico Burress and rot away in jail.

No kidding. These guys need to learn to shut their pieholes, especially during these times of high unemployment.

Id be looking to hit the jackpot before the new CBA comes into effect too.

Granted I expected to see some fireworks, but really he has no choice. Accept it or hold-out and lose up to $7M a year before a possible lockout.

For everything the owners want the players to concede during the next CBA, the owners should agree that players can no longer be tagged in consecutive seasons. That will definately get rid of a lot of resentment from the players reguarding tags

If it were you, you would feel diffrently. If he blows out his knee in preseason, it dramatically lowers his value, so when he finally gets a long term deal it will be much less. If anything villify the owners who are BILLIONAIRES and are using the tag as a way to not pay players their actual value.

So it would be fair to the Pats if they give him a huge contact and bonus and he blows his knee out in preseason. All of this stuff is bargained by both sides. Sometimes the owners have to pay big and sometimes the players win big. And if you can't take care of your family for a long time with $7M I have no sympathy for you.

its good for some and not so good for others. peppers made 16 mill last year. that's like a huge signing bonus. if he is tagged again this year he would make 21 mil. that would be 38 million in two years. that's about Haynesworth guaranteed money and he is locked in for at least 4 years.

that's not bad...

yeah and I know about potential injuries....

If it were me I'd want to maximize my salary. I'd want to get compensated at least as much as players that are performing to my level throughout the league. I'd expect at least that much money and a little more as a show of appreciation from the team's ownership for my efforts.

I'd also say NONE of this in the press and ensure that the FANS hear None of this business side of things as I'd realize that I'm one of the luckiest cheese eating b##stards on the PLANET to be SO fortunate as to be paid obscene amounts of money, to play the game I LOVE at such a High Level.

And I'd say none of this publicly because I'd know that this is ALL the fans are thinking and it would matter to me that my fans know that I know, how LUCKY I am.

Yet you'll continue to watch them play, and feed into the ratings and advertising dollars that continue to pad their bottom lines.

I wish people weren't so green with envy over professional athletes' salaries.
