Hi YR - to clarify, are you saying that you believe players would sign here for not the flat-out best offer, because of taxes? Just want to make sure I'm understanding your point. thx.

PS - state taxes suck!

No, I'm saying there is a reason why the Cowboys don't have to overpay.

It really depends on which FA's. There's a long list of FA and the longer they remain unsigned, the more likely they are to sign a deal. It's easy to say that X player wants to play for a contender, but are those contenders interested in you? It's still better to have a job than to wait by the phone waiting for it to ring. Dallas has it's issues, but teams like the Raiders and Browns are in worse positions and are more likely to have to overpay to lure players. The attractive things about Dallas is there are quite a few positions of need and a FA could get significant playing time to help prove themselves and the fact that Dallas still commands quite a bit of media attention helps the situation.

Think about a defensive player signing with Dallas...........since we don't run the ball, they get a lot more chance at additional snaps which gives them a big advantage at top level tackle and sack stats....look at the stats our defenders accumulated the 2nd half of the G.Bay game, makes the diff between meeting contract incentives or not :)

do you feel anyone will really sign in Dallas unless we do overpay for guys like Allen, Melton, etc. Meaning if one of these guys choose here, its almost 100% because we have them the best offer as there really is no other reason, other than maybe playing time?

thx

Pretty much all of these high profile type free agents are going to go where the money is. Any high level to elite caliber player knows that when they're in this position it's their one chance (most likely) to cash in.

These guys pay agents for a reason; so they get every penny they can convince themselves they're worth.

Okay, I'm not trying to get baited here (and you may not be trying to), but you don't think its plausible to tell a FA that you'll have a hell of a good chance to get the Superbowl with one of those teams, based on the today's information?

Denver and SF do have rings...what like 7 between them? Seattle didn't have one until last year, but I can't imagine those folks that signed there didn't at least let the fact that they were on the upswing influence them. At the end of the day though, money speaks, I agree.

Well hell if that's the case. We have rings too. Those rings don't mean anything SF last ring is older than ours and Denver is barely newer than ours.

The state income tax issue is brought up a lot in baseball, and I can only think of one example where it might have made an impact. In general I'm guessing the agents don't highlight that issue and it really does seem like players just go for top dollar, until their final gasps where things like rings or being close to home seems to matter more. Ware didn't go to Denver because of their proximity to a ring, he went there for 13 million dollars in his pocket this year. Maybe things like closeness to family or how good of a roster the team has is a tie breaker, but I'd definitely argue that its not a major issue with most players on their first FA deals.

I honestly don't think players even care about an extra 5% coming out of their check.

I'm not sure most players realize that signing in a given place can effect the money they get to take home.

It's true you have to overpay in free agency for certain players if you want them.

This is one of those years that I don't see anyone worth overpaying.

And agents don't consider it because it looks bad on their record as they try to recruit more business.

Let's just say that if you asked most NFL players what 5 percent of 100 is, they couldn't tell you.

Two myths slowly dying

Our salary cap doesn't limit us and we can sign whoever we want.

Jerry gets who Jerry wants.

I once read a bumper sticker that said, "Cowboys get paid, Steelers win championships." it's always stuck with me and when Jerry has overpaid for players, it always comes back up to mind.

The thing is, Moneyball came along, and it turned everybody into a general manager. And everyone decided the Oakland way was the best way. Never mind that Oakland never won and the Yankees did. Because no one writes books or makes movies about the Yankees b/c their success wasn't "innovative."
