Knowing we should have 3-4 comp picks, should we be aggressive with future picks to acquire players this year?
Absolutely YES. The Cowboys don't need 11 picks next year. In a defensive heavy draft this year, trade a 2018 4th and a 5th to get back into this draft and grab a great defensive player.
To maintain being a contender you need to hold the nucleus in place and bring in cheap, hungry, talented assets to round out the team. This team says it wants to use the draft for that and minimize FA dollar use. As well as the team has drafted in the last several years it is still given to chance a player will amount to anything. More picks increases your odds of hitting on players and creates competition that pushes people to try harder.Dallas isn't THAT far off from being a perennial contender; there is likely NOT going to be 11 drafted players next year that make the team, I would support trading something from next year if it produced another pick this year (if the deal was reasonable)
To me if you are looking at the draft to push you over the top in 2017, then you are looking at the draft wrong. Instant gratifications not what its about. Its long term team building and maintenance. While we will likely have 11 picks next year, I also believe we have alot of FA's and fringe guys in particular that will need to be replacedTo maintain being a contender you need to hold the nucleus in place and bring in cheap, hungry, talented assets to round out the team. Even if there weren't 11 slots on the team available I'd rather get to the end of training camp having to cut a few guys that make other 53s than a bunch of nobodies that ride on practice squads and fade from the NFL in a year.
Again, that being said if the FO feels strongly enough about an opportunity then they should take it. They are paid to make these decisions and we are free to criticize the job they do.
It would take a 2018 3rd to get a 2017 4th and a 2018 4th to get a 2017 5thThere is a big gaping hole between our pick in the 4th round and our pick in the 6th round. In this draft, there will be a number of talented players that drop in that range. I would not be surprised at all, and I would support, giving up a 2018 pick to get back into the bottom fourth or fifth rounds.
I don't get wanting a guy coming off this injury. He won't even be ready for next year. We're not outsmarting people with these moves for injured playersEspecially for like Sydney Jones in the late 2nd or early 3rd

its not about "outsmarting" anyone, it's about value at a Position of need. How smart is it next year to draft 11 players when only 5-6 will make the team...I don't get wanting a guy coming off this injury. He won't even be ready for next year. My point was that drafting Sidney jones in a trade up is ********. Jaylon smith watch 2.0.......I'm done with these injured guysits not about "outsmarting" anyone, it's about value at a Position of need. How smart is it next year to draft 11 players when only 5-6 will make the team...
