Oh, I don't agree at all. We had Miles who did play STs. We had Crayton who was gone the next year. We had Owens who was basically in the same boat. We had a couple of project guys who couldn't catch the ball. You don't keep WRs who can't catch in order to play STs. You keep WR who can catch and who can play STs so I don't really agree with that angle.

It was easy to see that he could catch and run routes. You say that they wanted to keep him around as a return man and I can understand that but if you got a guy who can actually play, why would you not put that guy on the 53 and designate one of these other guys who could not play to the 53? The only WR that contributed for the Cowboys for any length of time, that made the team is Miles. All the rest were gone in a short time or never panned out. Clearly, Philly believed he could play and they were right. I understand developing players and the PS but I think it was clear that we made a mistake and the team basically said the same. They thought they could hide him on the PS but that didn't happen and now, he's a pretty decent football player playing for somebody else.

I think it was a mistake.

How can it be a mistake when no other team ever signed him off of the practice squad? They were able to hide him there the entire 2008 season. It is not as if some team stole him off of the practice squad. It was no gamble by Dallas. They figured they could keep him on the PS for a year and then work him onto the roster in 2009. The one thing they couldn't foresee is that he would walk at the end of the year. That is on him, not Dallas. That is not a mistake on the Cowboys part.

And he was not ready in 2008. He couldn't get open in pre-season games. He couldn't be plugged into the game and contribute that season. So in 2008 he couldn't run routes and catch and he also didn't play special teams.

I wonder if Smith has 1 or 2 SB rings with the Cowboys...I think 2.

But no, the two are not comparable.

Amendola get good all of a sudden it seems...even as a slow short white guy at 185 lbs.

I think this may be the year the shine wears off of the Patriots.

Not a slight against Amendola, I do somewhat believe that Welker has been a product of the system, perhaps Amendola can give the same production (I doubt it though).

However, Welker has grown leaps and bounds over his days in Miami and such. He is not perfect, but he has made some great plays over the last 6 years.

"Amendola signed as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys on April 27, 2008.[13] His attempt to make it pro was featured on the HBO special Hard Knocks.[14] Amendola was cut by the Cowboys on August 30 and re-signed to the team's practice squad after clearing waivers.[15] [16][17] He spent the entire 2008 regular season on the team's practice squad."

I agree with the premise that Dallas should have kept him. He obviously had talent but wasn't the flashy player Jerruh likes. Dallas needs more players like Amendola that move the chains and don't drop passes. He would have solidified the slot for Dallas over the last 5 years.

I have little confidence in the organizations ability to recognize and develop talent. The drafts are a great example of this. Hardly anyone left, including early round picks from drafts that should be the nucleus of this team.

Dallas seems to have a good track record of getting free agents. Romo, Austin are good examples. Then they proceed to overpay them and mismanage the cap.

How is it that people keep missing the point that Dallas did try to keep him? He walked away. They recognized he could develop into a contributor if given time and they were willing to give it to him. He didn't want to wait and decided to sign with another team the first chance he got and that was only to the Eagles practice squad.

And he would not have solidified the slot position the last 5 years. Maybe the last 3, but he was not ready to hit the field in 2008. And in 2009, he was just okay, he was not solid.

Obviously, you know zilch about Jimmy Smith's time here, or his road to Jacksonville.
Why don't you enlighten us Mr. Know It All, what I meant was that there are two receivers that were here before, and went to ther teams and had success. I don't care how they left. I'm just saying, it would of been nice if they never left!
