I think they just essentially added a job for him so that he can get his feet wet as a coach. It's not like they fired the QB coach and replaced him with Grier. It's probably more of an apprenticeship. Kind of like bringing in an intern.

Grier did have one of the best preseason performances by a Cowboys QB a few years ago when he was allowed to play the entire game. Yes it was against scrubs but he will always have that moment, meaningless or not.

Exactly....guys like Marcus Dixon, our new DL coach started in a similar fashion. Lots of other former players not just for Dallas have been given jobs like this and it is a chance for them to work their way up.
