Will Jerry ever allow the "best" players to play?

Believe me I love Jerry as and owner, and the past couple of years he and his staff have done a fantastic job with this roster (even with the RW11 trade...none of us knew at the time he was going to be lazy). I also think the Cezowzki (can't spell it, or pronounce it) has done an amazing job and could be a top GM in this league.

My problem is that it always seems that they talk about competition on the team, but is there really? It's clear that the players that make the most..play the most. Ie. Barber and Roy. It's always been this way with Jerry. If they are the best players for those positions I can live with that, but if the players behind them are not starting, or playing because of the paycheck then that's wrong. It was very clear that Ogletree needed more playing time last year. It also took Austin 5 games to get on the field, only because of the injury. We also all know Felix should have gotten more touches.

It's almost like Jerry is afraid to hurt feelings, or that he might hurt his own since he pays the checks and makes the moves.

I might be wrong about this, but I don't think so. If we are truly going to be an elite team and get to the big bowl, the pendulum needs to shift.

I don't think Jerry is keeping anyone on the bench. I think he was the one lobbying to get Felix and Ogletree on the field more, and touted Austin early on. He also has used the word "progress stoppers" to describe some veterans who are no longer around.

Then what is your explanation for the success last year?

Teams and players need to learn how to win it all. Seems the franchise is just about where they were in 1992. Coming off a second round loss and having a team that is stacked.

Jerry is keeping the team in the news with his speculation on Barber. RW11 will not cure his out of sync with Romo by sitting on the bench.

Perspective, it's not just for breakfast anymore.

I'm pretty sure the coaches are determining who is playing and who is not as well as how much time a guy is seeing. I think much of what we hear from Jerry is based off what the coaches themselves are saying. Coaches were very high on Ogletree progress before Jerry ever mentioned him getting some playing time.

Jerry doesn't order coaches to play any particular player. For example, Drew Henson was Jerry's guy. He didn't give an interview without gushing about him. When Parcells said he had to go, Jerry cut him. No questions asked.

Last year Jerry was saying Choice and Felix needed more touches. Jerry wondered aloud about Barber's injury and even hurt his feelings a bit.

Jerry stumped for Ogletree last year as well.

I think the thread premise is just a bit off.

Barber...Crayton (Austin was/is better). It's just my opinion on the way Jerry runs things. I know this team is stacked, except at Oline and Dline. Jerry always uses the phrase "progress stoppers". Why does he wait to get rid of the player, instead of allowing the best players to play, young or old?

I think you're way off on thinking that Jerry is making most of the depth chart and who plays decisions.

But lets assume you're right for a second. Instead of grousing about the couple you wish were done differently (Roy vs Crayton maybe?) maybe you should congratulate him on the vast majority that he is obviously getting right. Or is he only getting blame and no credit?

Whoever is making the decisions I think we need to understand its not quite as easy as Madden. The stakes are HIGH once the regular season starts. No one wants to compromise their chance to win a single game because their job is on the line.

Often times with young guys its about getting adequate experience before they take the field because of the risks associated. Geez look at all the hand-wringing going on because Flo was cut loose.

There is competition...IN TRAINING CAMP! It took a record game from Austin to be kept in the starting lineup. And he is the only wr that was always on the field. People can scream and yell about RW starting, but he rotates out while Austin stays on the field. Flo and Hamlin are gone, and they made more than Free and Ball. I guess money doesn't always start.

Sorry, I don't agree. I don't think Jerry is forcing the coaches to play anyone. I think everyone within the organization believes Barber has deserved to be the starter. We'll see how this year goes but it appears to be getting to the point where Jones may indeed be better and deserve to be named the starter. I think we will see that happen when it's obvious he is better. That will probably be sooner rather than later. Barber may start and then finish but I don't think it will be long before we see Felix getting more carries than him.

Austin had not been better than Crayton by a long shot up until getting his chance to play last year. Once he broke out, he moved ahead of Crayton. Before that, Austin looked pretty bad to me. He could get open but didn't catch the ball half the time.

Not true, everything he has done as been near perfect except for that. for the price we paid we couldve gotten better, he only had 1 year of over 1k yards. I could've told you without knowing who he was it wasnt a great deal.

I think this is just a matter of perception. I've liked our starters the last three years, in general. It's the depth that has been a problem. Maybe that depth is not as much an issue anymore, the perception of holding back players has arisen in the minds of a few.

You might be on to something.

I have always said that jerra's heart is bigger than his brain, though some of his personnel moves lately show maturity as a GM while keeping his wildcatter spirit alive.

I do think that he keeps some around longer than their usefulness. Emmitt comes to mind. Brooking also. And Wade. And for the money he spent on Roy Williams, he did seem to want to get some kind of return on his money by needlessly keeping Roy on the field when Ogle needed more field time.

All in all, Jerra remains my owner crush as far as owners go. I cant think of another owner I'd like to have here. Jerra has his faults, but by gum, he gets the job done.
