He stuck with Garrett for a decade. McCarthy will at least be given the 4 years to prove himself.
Not necessarily. I think progress will be necessary for him to make it four years.
Holding it against Jerry for not getting rid of him after this year is unrealistic. Almost every coach that took over a team before this pandemic-marred season is struggling because they weren't given much time to implement changes. McCarthy's plan was to not make many changes on offense so that he could rely on that as a strength while the defense faced a learning curve, but then he lost his center, both starting tackles and his starting quarterback.
There is a reasonable expectation for coaching overcoming injury, but expecting a coach to overcome those injuries while trying to get the defense up to speed on a new system is expecting way too much. That's not excusing the defensive coaches for the defense performing this poorly, but it creates a level of understanding for why McCarthy isn't having success this year.
The bar will be raised next year, probably to making the playoffs if we have our QB back, and if McCarthy doesn't reach it, then his opportunity to lead this team should end. If he reaches that, then the bar should be set higher for a couple of years, where he is expected to contend for Super Bowls.
