Will Jerry trade 2010 picks on draft day, to move up a round or two this year?

I don't know the ramifications of the uncapped year ... but

Just in terms of "deferred gratification" ...

Jerry traded down in the draft last year, to get better picks this year ... trading our 4 last year for a 3 this year, etc.

Do you guys think, maybe he should go the "other way" this year, and put his "credit card" down and trade a 2 next year for a 3 this year ... or even a 1 next year for a 2 this year?

Is it a good enough year, in depth of prospects, to draft a bunch of guys, or trade for picks this year ...

Or should Jerry keep his powder dry?

if he thinks trading draft picks for better picks is the way to go, then he should do it. if not, then he shouldn't do it.

Due to the fact that players not making the team will be charged this year against the cap, I would suspect Dallas would be trading this year's picks for next year's picks.

Way to go out on a limb there.

I would love trading a pick or two to move up in next years draft, but not at the expense of missing someone we really like on our board. I'm sure Jerry will be wheeling and dealing. He always does.

*Shrugs* I really don't mind either way. Whatever works out best to give us the best draft we can have this year and put us into position to have the best draft we possibly can next year as well.

i think like most of you that the cowboys will trade a few picks this year to recoup at least their 5th draft pick they lost in last year for trading for holland og.

Now at same time, you dont want to trade your 2010 picks next year. For one big reason, as you all know, might be an uncapped year, going into 2010. So, you want all of your draft picks that you can get, because that might be last year you can get draft picks till a deal is struck between players and owners.

The rookies coming out in the draft may see this is their last shot to get money in the draft, so a ton of them will come out in next years draft for such a reason. So, you want to have your draft picks for 2010 and then some. Remember now that the commissioner goodell has stated that maybe a rookie pool for money should be set up, that means when a deal is struck that the rookies might not get as much money, so the rookies come out in 2010. So, yes you want to have all of your draft picks in 2010 and then some. Just my thoughts.

I hope not...

I say that because I want the Boys to have all the ammo possible to turn their first rounder next year into one of three quarterbacks-- Tim Tebow, Mark Bradford or Colt McCoy... and I hope that this season is successful enough that to get any of them will involve trading up...

So I'd rather see Jerry swap a pick or two this year for picks next year... really, with 11 draft picks, he has a good deal of ammo to go trading up this year in the middle rounds, if he sees a player he wants... he doesn't really want to be in the first round this year, anyway...

on top of that silverbear, if the cowboys do good in the draft this year, then they may finally get to do what i have envisioned from the dallas cowboys. Having quality backup players that you can trade or that have value to be traded for draft picks.

So, lets do a scenario, the cowboys trade say a 5th for a 4th next year, and a 6th for a 5th next year. Then the cowboys trade a backup player sometime this year, for a 2nd or 3rd draft choice or include in the package of the dallas cowboys picks in 2010 to trade for tebow or colt or bradford.

I seriously doubt the Cowboys will draft a 1st round QB unless Romo has a poor season.

A first round pick for Tebow or Colt McCoy???? Wow. Don't think so.

i will be really pissed if we draft a QB in the first round in 2010 because that will only happen if we do very poorly and romo does not perform up to expectations this year. i dont think this will happen. you dont draft a QB to groom with your #1 pick.

How old is Romo??

If you draft a blue chipper next year, he's ready to contend for a starting job in 3 years...

2010 is just about the right time, IMO, to go after Tony's eventual successor...

romo will be 28 best i remember this year at some point, so in reality he has 5 to 6 years left

now if the cowboys draft a QB in 3rd or 4th round this year, i dont think they will go after a qb next year, but if the cowboys fail this year badly, then yes i see the cowboys going after a star qb like tebow or bradford or colt

It's not the idea of drafting Tony's successor that I have a probelm with. It's the notion that Tebow will go in the 1st round or even Colt.

Tebow might be the best college quarterback EVER but he'll never be an NFL QB. And Colt won't have the measurables to be a highly drafted QB. I wouldn't even consider drafting either in the first round much less trading up for them.

because this is the year that either romo steps up; either he does or you move on with someone else

if the cowboys someway can get a decent draft pick like a 4th for greg ellis and say carpenter is traded too for a decent draft pick and the cowboys can load up on the offensive line like getting a duke robinson og and a decent wr like johnny knox or mike thomas and a OT like in the 4th to 5th round, then your offensive line is kinda fixed.

You will already have your rbs with barber, felix and choice, wrs with the rookie this year, roy williams, austin and TEs with witten and bennnett and surprise rodney hannah, then your offense is fixed like when rothinsberger was when he was drafted by the steelers his rookie year,

and you can go with a young qb like tebow or bradford or colt,
so in reality this is the boom or bust ,make it or break it year for romo

well i disagree, when the steelers drafted Rothlinsberger, he was a rookie but he took that team to the super bowl his first year, reason why he was talented but the steelers offense was built along with a tough defense

so if the cowboys can get a young duke robinson now, a rooke wr like johnny knox or mike thomas with speed and a good backup OT, then this team is fixed and ready to go with a young promising rookie QB

along with if the cowboys can get sidbury de/lb and jason williams linebacker, then this team is fixed with hopefully a nt like sammie hill, then yes to me this team can do it with a rookie qb like colt or tebow or bradford if romo doesnt cut it this year

You start packaging picks to move up in the first round to draft a QB, you're going to have a serious problem with Romo. The Dallas media and fans would tear that situation apart. Especially when the team hits a rough patch.

I can't think of many situations where drafting a QB to sit 3 or 4 years while you have a quality QB - not already on his last legs - has worked out well.

Jerry loves his face time so I wouldn't be shocked if he made a significant draftday trade. Giving up a 2010 1st is his best chance of moving into this year's 1st round.

I hope he doesn't. I think you take the BPA with 51 but you can move up a few spots in the 2nd if there is a player with a high grade available. We have 10 Day Two picks so I'd have no problem with us trading up towards the top of the 2nd round.

Besides, giving up 2010 picks really messes with my brilliant 2010 Draft Strategy (see sig).
