I'm curious to see what everyone thinks. To me, this is one of the most interesting sub-plots of the offseason.

While his cap number is high, I just can't see us creating another hole to fill.

I don't think he is going to return, to restructure the contract only increases the years of the contract to lower next year salary and quite frankly I don't know if Allen has 1 more year left in him let alone 2 or 3.

Is Drew Bledsoe still considered our starting QB? YES

I think the rest is elementary............................

At the rate Allen play has dropped off I can't see paying 8 mill dollars for poor play on the offensive line. This team has to be able to do as others and cut lose player who are getting up in age and are not productive if we expect to keep ourselves out of the hell hole we were in a few years back with the salary cap. Dallas did a lot of restructuring of player’s contract who were well past their prime and it cost us a heck of a lot. I like Larry a lot and have been a big fan of his but I like the Cowboys more.

1 year left? He was their best one this year. That's not saying alot.

You would hurt your cap more by releasing him than by keeping him, especially if you have to spend 3-4 milliom in FA.

Peterman has not shown that he is ready, so unless you are going to draft and start a rookie, I am not sure what options there are.

You only save, I believe the figure was about 2.5 million by letting him walk. So you have to replace him for less than 2.5 million in salary and performance and I am not sure you can do that.

Dropped off? Allen at 70% is better than 90% of the guards in this league. How many guys blew past Allen this year? How many official sacks did he give up? He made the Pro Bowl again? They better get rid of him before he stops going to Hawaii.......

Allen made it on reputation. Allen did not perform to a ProBowl standards. Chris Snee from the Giants outperformed Allen. Allen starts off the first two quarters dominant and then is gassed by the late 3rd and 4th quarter. Funny how people say Newman was snubbed, but won't admit that Allen snubbed someone else from the probowl.

It would be hard to give up a sack from his position faster than the Tackles were allowing their man to go by. I saw a lot of times this year where LA was just standing out if front of the QB and he was not blocking anyone, his guy had beaten him and he was standing in never land not able to catch back up.

While he is the best we have, he is no where close to being one of the top G's anymore - Pro Bowl or not.

This question is really a classic debate between "win now" or "planning for the future."

Somewhere I believe the thus far uncapped year (2007?) is a factor in this but I'm not certain how.

Assuming what we've heard in the media is accurate (I know, HUGE assumption) then cutting Allen does nothing to clear significant cap space in 2006.

Further, lets assume we can find an improvement over Larry somewhere. Can we add this starter AND find adequate b/u help AND strengthen the other spots we want to on the OL (Tackle? Center?)

As badly as Allen has fallen off, and as bad a value as he is for the $$ he costs I think we simply have too many holes to fill to cut him loose this year.

I think he returns for 2006 because we are between a rock and a hard place.

You sign a guy like Hutchinson you give him a 4 or 5 year contract and spread his bonus for the length of the contract making his 1st year cap friendly but I don't see the use in spending big bucks on a player who is no where close to what he once was Dallas did this type of stuff in the late 90's and we paid dearly for keeping guys who could not do the job any longer and we became so strapped we could not afford to get decent FA. Our cap now is in great condition and I think we need to continue to keep the cap in great condition just as team like Philly have had to release good player soley because of production vs cost.

Please Pro Bowl is a popularity contest especially when talking O-line where many people don't pay much attention and just vote for the name without regard to performance

I agree we need to fix the line but you sure as heck do not fix it by overpaying for a guy who is on his last leg.
