Will Larry Allen be a Cowboy next season?

Allen should take a pay cut or retire.

Unfortunately he can claim he was once again a pro-bowl guard, and indeed no guard is better at smashing linebackers and DL into the ground. But LA has lost a lot of mobility-- he can still pull across the field but he no longer has the quickness and range to block guys who may have gotten past an adjacent teammate. This lack of quickness causes a few embarassing whiffs--

-- of course no one scrutinizes LA like we do and the grass always seems greener elsewhere...

For example, Hutchinson has this quickness, but he doesn't have the power of Larry Allen at the point of attack. Just remembering LA mowing people down vs. Detroit reminds what a force he can be.

Let’s just say I don't see Larry or his agent passing up the 8 mill and taking a pay cut. They may inquire about restructuring the contract but again all you’re doing is adding more years to his contract to spread the cost and I don't see that as being a good thing for the Cowboys. I agree this is not an easy decision for the Cowboys and those who cover the Cowboys acknowledge this is not an easy situation but I think sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do what is in the teams overall best interest.

Yes Sir. I would like for the Cowboys to use Allen's salary to sign Barry and Bentely (if he isn't franchised). We would fill two holes and only create on with Allen gone. We could also afford to start Peterman because he would be surrounded by Adams and Bentley.

No one in the league is going to pay LA 8 million dollars. No one is going to pay him more than 3 million in base salary. Dallas will find a lower salary and may even agree to let LA test the FA waters first while keeping their own offer on the table.

But LA has Dallas in a very tight spot. The Cowboys already need an upgrade at RT, C, and based on Rivera's play last year, RG. Dropping LA would leave the Cowboys with four spots needing an upgrade and Flozell coming off an injury. That's some built-in negotiating power for sure.

Everyone's favorite whipping boy Al Johnson gave up fewer sacks than Allen and I believe that the "bust" Rivera was right around him.

The time has come for him to take a drastic paycut and stay as a backup or leave. He's just not an effective player any longer. One of the best ever but hurting the OL by being on it and unlike the others on the line, there's really not much hope of him being better next year.

I don't think Dallas plans on giving up on Johnson just yet. I do agree this is not an easy move and if by some chance Allen can return for much less than he is currently looking at and we do not have to extend the lenght of the contract then chances are he will be back but I don't think that will be the case.

I voted no because I truly hope Larry Allen is gone. The guy can barely walk, much less move around in space.

Every step Larry takes looks like it's painful. L.A. is long in the tooth and is only regressing at this point. Time to see what we have in Peterman, or go and find a suitable replacement.

This O-line needs some serious help.

Who thinks that maybe Rivero will be better next season after resting his back?

Could be that if Larry doesn't re-work his contract he will be gone, but it does depend on who else is available in free agency ...

Dropped off? Allen at 70% is better than 90% of the guards in this league. How many guys blew past Allen this year? How many official sacks did he give up? He made the Pro Bowl again? They better get rid of him before he stops going to Hawaii.......

That is simply not true. Allen is no way better than 90% of the rest of the guards in the league at this point and definitely not 70% better than 90% of them.

Unfortunately I have to agree with that.

People often cling to the misguided belief that older athletes will miraculously spring back into great physical condition (see Larry Allen) after an injury. The thing to consider is that Rivera is showing signs of significant degenerative conditions (conditions that were obvious at the time he signed) which are unlikely to significantly improve.

Now Rivera claims his offseason conditioning was significantly curtailed due to his disk injury and feels he will be better next year. At this point, this is what we have to hope for because his signing bonus makes him difficult to cut at this point.

JJ is a very, very slow learner - did the exact same thing with Larry Allen in 2001 - big signing bonus to a fast ageing and injured offensive guard.

My guess - he makes the same mistake again within the next two years in an attempt to shore up the OL. He will do this instead of fixing the core problems - the lack of ability to judge talent on the OL and the poor OL coaching we have had here since Houck left.

I don't think he will if he doesn't restructure. With that said, I think Jerrah will do everything he can to reward his longtime O-lineman and make a good deal to keep the money in LAs pocket and not break the bank this year.

"While his cap number is high, I just can't see us creating another hole to fill."

We already have a huge hole to fill everythime LA steps on the feild. On passing plays they blow by him like is not even there and leave him standing there looking stupid. He is and has been the most useless starter we have had since 2001 and there is always some bull excuse, "he was hurt", "He was out of shape", "He did not understand what Parcells wanted from him" and the excuses go on and on.
Larry Allen should have been cut 4 years ago when nobody would trade anything more than a 4th round pick. That right there should tell you something. He is no good anymore. He is not even worth a 4th round pick anymore, we should have took it when we found a sucker. Curly
