Will McClay?

McClay is viewed as some sort of a personnel genius in Dallas. To be fair the drafts have been much better of late. Can never forget the Jerry led days of special teams drafts. McClay also heads up the pro scouting so he is largely responsible for the FA pick ups. Last 3 years of FA's:

2017- Paea, Carroll, Moore, Bell, Blanton, Hillman
2016 - Thorton, Mayowa, Morris, Sanchez, Looney
2015 - Hardy, Gachkar, McClain, McFadden, Barden, Brown

That is some group. To me Looney is the best pick up. Morris and Madden tied for second. Third is........Mayowa??? I toss McClain and Hardy for obvious reasons. My point is that Dallas has been terrible with FA signings. Terrible. Several of these guys didn't make the teams. Free Agency is a crapshoot at best but compare the Eagles pickups over the last 2 years. Not good.

Fans tend to overrate their own. Can the same be said for Will McClay? Compared to Jerry a bag of rocks would be better but I am starting to question the "Genius" of Will McClay.

Am I wrong?

And it really handicaps us and that's we've gone from America's team to Next Years team.

Maybe next year we'll get Earl Thomas, Frederick will be healthy, D Linemen won't get suspended, we'll have a TE, better coaching, Ect...

McClay drafts have singlehandedly saved this organization in a huge transitional period. Almost 4 years removed from our 12-4 team that could have won it all and we can still be contenders with almost an entirely different group.

And we went cheap in those three years specifically because the cap situation had previously been a nightmare with bloated contracts and mismanagement of assets.

Decent? How is that group decent? I despise the Eagles. Last year - Blount, Long, Foles, Smith. 2016... Jenkins, Curry, Wiesnewski. All had big roles in that Super Bowl. How exactly does Joe Looney compare to that? McClay deserves scrutiny.

The be fair, Paea would have been fine for us if not for an unforeseeable injury that led to his retirement. It wasnt a bad free agent you just get unlucky sometimes.

it seems drafts have been very good to great and recent scrap heap picks ups have been amazing (e.g. irving, k edwards)

fa has been bad but our fa strategy has been limited by stephen

I think Bill Parcells said if you going to cook the dinner at least you should shop for the groceries, you won't get many quality ingredients if your budget is $20. I'd like to see what he can do with more money in his wallet.

Only bad signings have been Ex-Eagles. Cedric Disappear Thornton and Nolan Carroll .
The rest were signed for depth outside of Hardy

Agree here 100%. Team philosophy is to buy low on FA's and the type of player is a role player or diamond in the rough. All you can expect here IMO.

They are budget FA shoppers now. Not sure entirely what led them there but I am actually OK with it. I'd rather build through good drafts like they've been doing. I think Stephen might be the one curbing the FA spending as he has gained more power.

McClay needs to take some heat for the philosophy too. Jerry and Junior deserve most of the blame but Will McClay gets some too.

No. I'm shocked some team hasn't offered him a GM role yet. If the Cowboys let him go, he would be unemployeed all of one day.

Because the PAtriots did it like a decade ago and then they stopped doing it and started spending.


Brandon Carr just forever ruined free agency for everyone. Now we aren't allowed to sign people.

Yeah most likely...he wasn't horrendous but definitely not worth the money he got.
