Will McClay?

McClay is viewed as some sort of a personnel genius in Dallas. To be fair the drafts have been much better of late. Can never forget the Jerry led days of special teams drafts. McClay also heads up the pro scouting so he is largely responsible for the FA pick ups. Last 3 years of FA's:

2017- Paea, Carroll, Moore, Bell, Blanton, Hillman
2016 - Thorton, Mayowa, Morris, Sanchez, Looney
2015 - Hardy, Gachkar, McClain, McFadden, Barden, Brown

That is some group. To me Looney is the best pick up. Morris and Madden tied for second. Third is........Mayowa??? I toss McClain and Hardy for obvious reasons. My point is that Dallas has been terrible with FA signings. Terrible. Several of these guys didn't make the teams. Free Agency is a crapshoot at best but compare the Eagles pickups over the last 2 years. Not good.

Fans tend to overrate their own. Can the same be said for Will McClay? Compared to Jerry a bag of rocks would be better but I am starting to question the "Genius" of Will McClay.

Am I wrong?

Garrett's brother is the Director of Pro Scouting.

McClay is not the GM.

Technically McClay is over Garrett's brother but he does not have the ability to fire him.

How has that budget FA process worked for us? About to lose Dak's rookie contract and the OL is getting older. Remind me why the budget FA process is such a good thing? McClay needs to take some heat for the philosophy too. Jerry and Junior deserve most of the blame but Will McClay gets some too.
So you're saying we should have paid more than KC for Sammy Watkins (3 years, 48 million dollars)? You're delusional. Stephen has told all of us 1,000 times. We do not want to pay good players great player money. Example: Brandon Carr. I will agree to an extent though that we do need to acquire more talent in FA. Writing checks for proven, impact players is an important aspect of roster building. I had literally never heard of Dominick Sanders and Jeron Johnson until last week.

This OL is also still in their prime years too. Tyron is the oldest one and he was born in 1990.

Was he responsible for Laurent Robinson or was that before McClay's time? And you have to give Hurns, Thompson and Austin some time to see what they do here. So far the Flemming signing doesn't look great though as a ST if we're looking at Green at T again. Losing Marcus Martin sucks. I think we've tended to give McClay too much credit too WJ

I'm more disappointed in our UDFA crop this year.

What a waste from a surprisingly strong group of UDFAs to pick from

The judgement of skill sets and tendencies of players is probably target on...but one never knows how that will adjust or not given a new environment and leadership guidance. Here, applications of success in free agency has been cash flow restricted...and hence, not as much an influence on team dynamics.

Will McClay is by far one of the best in the business, there is a reason why Jerry has to keep upping his salary. Just make the man GM in title/name as well SMH.

Article from [that Redacted website lol] states he was director of football research at the time and was key in scouting him (pro) and bringing him in.

You must be delusional because I never mentioned anything about Sammy Watkins. Car may not have been worth the money but he was a good player here. Showed up in big spots too. Good luck with that delusion.

Mentioned Watkins because he was the only "big-time" FA that we admittedly went after this off season.

Your logic suggests we should have just ponied up the money.

I think he has done very well draft and FA. I think the addition of Joe Thomas looks very good, have high hopes for Austin, Hurn and several others. Low price pickups or as they say churning the bottom of the roster I am not expecting to find greatness

Decent? How is that group decent? I despise the Eagles. Last year - Blount, Long, Foles, Smith. 2016... Jenkins, Curry, Wiesnewski. All had big roles in that Super Bowl. How exactly does Joe Looney compare to that? McClay deserves scrutiny.

What did the Eagles do the year before that when they finished 7-9? Other than last year, when have the Eagles had the success they had with backups, FA signings and trades? Never you say? Exactly.

Where did my logic suggest that Dallas should land the most expensive FA in the class? Can you point that out please?

Here is some logic - If you are going to get bargains in FA, try to get those bargains to help out.

You do know it is 2018 and Dallas hasn't won a thing in 23 years. You know this right?

Wil can only scout and reccomend with the player pool that's available.....no one hits on every middle (or lower) tier of players.

The drafts and scouting are light years above what Jerry was bringing in here.

My post was referring the history of the eagles. What does the upcoming 2018 season have to do with how they were fortunate one time in entire history of the franchise? You know I was not making any statements about Dallas? Right?

McClay drafts have singlehandedly saved this organization in a huge transitional period. Almost 4 years removed from our 12-4 team that could have won it all and we can still be contenders with almost an entirely different group.

And we went cheap in those three years specifically because the cap situation had previously been a nightmare with bloated contracts and mismanagement of assets.
Could have..could be..
