I think McClays job is to do exactly what an NFL GM would do, but instead of acting on his determinations, he brings those thoughts to Jerry and son, and they figure out if they think that works or not.

But they dont really know since they don’t study film, don’t know the rest of the league, or how to evaluate talent in general….which explains why they will only sign their own players to big money deals.

well after 28 years of the jones BS the draft would be okay but they have had to many misses not hits. parson was a rare hit but the rest was and is a crap shoot. here is the thing your the coach and before you make a roster change jerry comes out with his big mouth on tv and sabotages you. put this ball in your court what would you do just stay quiet like a good little guy or go in his office and tell him that it was not right to put his drunk opinion in on my decisions, that is why JIMMY JOHNSON left and how many super bowls has jerry won with his so called GM style

McClay became vice president of player personnel in 2017. The Cowboys changed their big spending ways 10 years ago after paying top money for Brandon Carr and not getting as much of a return on that investment as they wanted. McClay was with the team at the time, but he didn't have a lead role (director of football research).

The last time the Dallas Cowboys spent big on an outside free agent was in 2012 when they signed Brandon Carr to a five-year $50 million deal. Since then, the front office philosophy is simple and staunch: spend on our own. Don’t spend big outside. Find inexpensive veterans to fill holes. Focus heavily on the draft. Rinse and repeat.

One of the things that frustrates me most is that the Joneses finally learned how to draft better around the same time they decided to be frugal in free agency. Back when Jones was slinging money around, we were a pretty bad drafting team.

They can't seem to understand that you have to do both well to succeed. If you bring in a La'Roi Glover and draft a Shante Carver, Ebenezer Ekuban and Kavika Pittman, you're still not going to be very good. If you draft a Micah Parsons, but bring in a Carlos Watkins. Tarell Basham and Brent Urban, you might be better, but you're still not going to be great.

At the end of the day, those decisions are made by the Jones boys. Will is just an employee.

My personal thought is JJ doesn’t want to give the illusion he’s buying a title.

He wants to be those patriot teams that were winning super bowls. That had a core but we’re able to piece it together year after year.

Jerry wants to prove he’s smarter than everyone else.

I actually don’t think we have lacked talent over the past 15-20 years. In fact I’d say we’re pretty good at drafting. Where we have always fallen short coaching in my opinion

dream on and dream on after 27 years i will say again dream on. being dumb an buying jerry's bs is again dumb like i've said before and will say again buying cowboys merchandize and buying those expensive tickets into the games will make dumb and dumber ego grow and justify all the so called GM moves they make and every body but them knows and can see the dumb moves they make but they can't help them selves can they. so to give them a sharp reminder of there dumb moves STOP buying there bs and if you have to root for this scrub team they have put together do it at home cost you less in dollars and mental depression when they get to a game at the last of the year and stink it up which they will.

They have been going by his draft boards for the majority of the time, and spend to keep their own "guys they like" mantra. And at times overspend (Dak and Zeke)
