It's the Jones family man. Why do yall twist yourselves in knots trying to blame everyone but them?
We have a multi billionare running the Cowboys like a mom and pop shop!. This owner did a lot of bragging in the early days about how he was a risk taker, gambler.
He is 180 degrees different now than he was in 1989. He has made billions just by owning the team and now won't really spend on trying to win every year.
He signs his guys but he is not a big spender. This ownership is not trying to out and win a title.
You would have to be blind to think that Jerry is.
If you walk into his office and see the top 10 things on his list, winning a SB is probably 10th.

The man behind the scenes, we mention the Jones family often. But what if, just what if, Will has a bigger voice that's the lead in saying SPEND LESS, build through the draft?? Don't spend big in free agency, that's not the way to build a team.

Please give your thoughts
Everyone makes a big deal about another Jerry YES man.
The buck stops with Jerry and ONLY Jerry!

Why would McClay be a budget minded player acquisition guy? The only one in the history of the league.

It's Stephen. He has basically said as much and Jerry has backed it. Jerry gave an interview a few years ago where he said Stephen reels him in when Jerry wants to spend big.

I think McClays job is to do exactly what an NFL GM would do, but instead of acting on his determinations, he brings those thoughts to Jerry and son, and they figure out if they think that works or not.

But they dont really know since they don’t study film, don’t know the rest of the league, or how to evaluate talent in general….which explains why they will only sign their own players to big money deals.
This is exactly why our front office fails. Jerry and Stephen are too lazy to do the full time jobs of gm and personnel guy. They know nothing about the rest of the league players or coaches so it’s always home grown or retreads. How many other teams have 80 year old GM’s. Or 70 year old. Plus, they don’t know how to evaluate talent or build a complete team.

Will’s job in FA is to find the youngest, cheapest, once promising players he can find. That’s what they do and I don’t think that’s what he wants, it’s what he’s told to do. He’s actually pretty good at it.

I don’t think it’s Will’s fault that we are not spending. The bottom line, will always come down to Jerry and Stephen. I think, we would have been in more trouble, without Will, finding some players to plug into this roster. Our drafting is the only thing keeping us competitive. Would I like us to be more aggressive in free agency; hell, yes. Even if they looked at several positions of need and just found a free agent that we could say; that position is now fixed for the next few years. It would cross it off our need list so we can address another in the draft. We have been using Will more often to compensate for the poor choices from Jerry world.

They have too much on their plate. Try to do everything instead of passing some of it off.

And his son who's calling the shots is a trust fund kid with a Chemical Engineering degree. I doubt he's taken any business classes. They have run this thing into the grown and we keep showing up for it because we loved the team long before they got here.

There is this general thought out there that the Cowboys are cheap. That just isn't true. No team in the NFL is. Just about everyone spends right up to the cap every year and when they don't, it rolls over and they spend it the next year.

Player spending amount is not a factor.

The Cowboys generally choose to retain their own players over chasing guys in free agency and they frequently pay handsomely to do it. That's the real debate and issue. If they weren't paying DLaw $20m or Zeke $16m, they could use that money in free agency.

I’ll agree, Jazz. They are spending time on getting marketing contracts and getting concerts in to the stadium while real football people are spending that time on football. I do keep them on the hook for some laziness.

Of course we have no idea what kind of influence McClay has over Jerry's purse strings, but it seems to me, if his job is dependent on the product that takes the field, it would be against his own interests to limit spending on free agents.

I would be curious to know who convinced Jerry that paying Zeke $90 million for 6 years made sense. Or who convinced him to pony up $160 million for Dak for 4 years. People are coming up with all kinds of theories on the difference between the Cowboys and the Eagles and I think these contracts, and some others, are the difference. I don't think Roseman would ever pay his RB $15 million and I do think he would have moved on from Dak before paying him $40 million. Of course we will find out if I am right when it comes time for the Eagles to pay Hurts. Was McClay willing to trade Cooper for a 5th round pick? or was that all on Jerry?

McClay and his staff
  • evaluate all college and current NFL talent
  • build our draft board
  • rank free agents based on current skill

the allocation of spending (draft picks and cap dollars) is up to the Jones, with those rankings and needs inmind

Yeah.. 27 years is a trend. the league really needs the Cowboys to have a new owner. There has to be a league emergency meeting to get a new owner.
Let Jerry own an expansion team but let Bezos or Musk come in and run this team.

We are equivalent to the Washington team and Detroit, only three teams in NFC not to make championship game since 95 for Dallas, and since 91 for the other two.

Dallaswas middle the pack in FA spending in 2022, at 120.5 mil for 15 FAs…..or about 50% more than Philly

I'm going to assume when it comes to money, the buck stops with Jerry and Stephen.
