Will new stadium create a home team advantage?

I seriously think this is a big thing that isn't talked about. When I watch the Jags play, I see a team that is so much better at home. Why? Because they have stands that are right over the field. It is so loud for opposing teams that it is a tremendous boost to the Jags. Do you think we will finally have a home field advantage? Reason I am bringing it up is that I have been to Texas Stadium in the 90's. It is the quietest stadium I have ever been to. When I watch games on TV I see little advantage to playing at home in front of a passive crowd. Is it passive or is it how far away the stands are and how its a stadium on the smaller size?

There is a combination of issues -

1) Fans. Cowboys fans who live in North Texas and attend games just don't have the Pittsburg/Green Bay culture, mentality or attitude. I've tried to explain and defend this to people who aren't from here, but I give up. It's just how it is.

2) Acoustics/setup - I was at the Indy game this year where we won, and I can guarantee you the entire stadium was going crazy and loud. But I don't think it translated on television. I will say though, that the most energetic this crowd has ever been when I was there, was in 2003 against Arizona. My ears rang.

To answer your question - maybe a little bit, especially if they change the acoustics. But the Cowboys will never be a home team like Green Bay or Pittsburgh. Just not the way it is.

cheers to unfortunate truths

the Indy game was the exception to the rule (the rule being a crowd that ranks below last in American sports as far as being a factor at ALL)

what the Zone needs to do (what WE need to do) is get a group of seats for the new stadium and raise hell... and show these corporate ***wipes that fake their fan status how it is done.

The fans are right next to the field in Kansas City too. It can be an intimidating place.

Back in the late 1980s when the Saints were good, the SuperDome was one of the first places where noise levels were monitored for the television audience ... there would be pictures of sound meters, etc. The NFL tried to put in crowd noise rules.

I think dmg's question is a good one. It would be interesting to know how loud the new stadium could be if it had a loud crowd in it (even though Dallas crowds are generally not the most vocal).

Just be grateful that you have "us" NorthEast representatives. The New York fans of the Dallas Cowboys.

I have been to a few places. I have to give credit where credit is due to the Buffalo fans. That place is rocking during the game and they have been a bad team for years now. The tailgating is outrageous. I can only imagine what it was like for some of the AFC championship games.
I just hope the addition of more seating and acoustics will give us some sort of edge.

I agree. I have been to many Cowboy games and when things are going good the crowd can get noisy but nothing like I have seen at other stadiums. It seems more like a white collar atmosphere.

Here in D.C. the difference is amazing to me. I went to the old RFK Stadium for a few Skins games, routing for them to lose of course. RFK was deafening, I mean, I couldn't hear myself think. At the new Fed Ex, it seems like everyone is sleeping. Should be interesting to see how the new stadium is w/ the fans, I sure hope they can get loud, but I have a hard time believing that it will.

The Colts game this year was unbelievably loud, so that is a positive, it can be done, and hopefully it will. HFA is huge in the NFL, the Boys should win at home every single time in my mind.

I totally agree with this. I posted this same thing a couple years ago and was basically laughed at. I live in Denver and while I have not been to any games here in Invesco Field, I have been to some games at Mile high Stadium. That place got extremely loud.

I traveled to Dallas and was there the day Emmitt broke the record. Trust me it was very loud in Texas Stadium that day, very loud. I had set my VCR to record the game and when I came home and watched it I was amazed at how quit the crowd sounded on TV. It was as loud as any Bronco game I had been to at Mile high, but it definetly did not translate that way over the TV.

You've got a great point there. Loud begets louder.

Pitt and GB have a far more "working class" fan base. In Dallas, you've got a lot of somewhat casual fans. In some stadiums the fans KNOW when to make noise and when to be quiet. Half the fans at Cowboy games wouldn't know that there was a difference.

The combination of less knowledgable fans and the conservative O and D run in the past few years makes for a stadium where half the fans are too bored to get rowdy. Take-it-or-leave-it fans don't understand defending against the run first or running on 1st and 2nd down. They understand sacks, long bombs, and little else.

Also, our mascot is so lame. Who is going to get pumped up by Rowdy?

Buffalo is one of those towns where there is little to do but drink, eat wings, and root for the Bills. I've never been to a game there but a friend goes home every winter to catch one. The level of drunkeness is outrageous as you would expect if you had to sit in 10 degree weather to watch your team.

The size does make a difference. Stadiums like FedEx are so cavernous, and half the fans are so far away from the field that they can't sty interested nonstop because they're not sure quite what is going on. Seattle's stadium is just fantastic, I think. That's what Dallas ought to be.

I feel bad for whoever has to sit next to me when I go to Cowboy games in the future.

Because sitting and being quiet are two things that have about as much chance of occuring as me knitting and ironing.

Same here, I have yet to leave a Cowboys game with my voice in tact. Normally takes about 2 to 3 days before I regain my voice.

There will be no excuse for 100,000 fans not to be loud. Who cares about acoustics. 100,000 should be loud. The fans at Cowboys games for the most part are just too sedated.

Personally, I blame Bill Parcells.

Joe Fan held a press conference after the Cowboys announced Wade Phillips was the new head coach, where he stated:

… Coach Parcells my first year as a fan, the fans kind of cheered how they wanted to do, second year and last year he kind of directed us too much, … . You know, you can’t really mess with the fans out there. You can tell them to show up and to be loud … … He had us cheering like robots. No disrespect to coach Parcells but, you can’t really tell the fans when to yell, or how loud to be, or they're gonna be out there sounding like robots. He didn't want us too loud, because of his fragile eardrums. So that’s what we were doing last year.
