Will the start of free agency tell you anything about this team in 2023

Are they sitting back again, or do they actually want to get this right? What do they need to show you, to make you believe they're trying to contend for a championship. Please give your thoughts.
No fan should put themselves through the disappointment of expecting the Joneses to change their free agent philosophy.

The jones family is on vacation the first week of free agency
Then for the rest of free agency they are dumpster diving. A few treasures they've found doing that will keep them convinced their method is sound.

Sadly, there are always some quality free agents out there who are neither first-week premiums or dumpster trash, but the Joneses don't shop that market.

I don't necessarily believe that they need to make a big splash. There are some moves I'd like to see and being proactive in free agency is necessary. They should've done more last year, but that's neither here nor there at this point.

The way I see it, our obvious holes are:
LG
RT (until Steele is healthy)
DT
LB (re-sign LVE and it isn't a necessity)
WR

Da'Ron Payne would be my first priority and I'd be willing to throw some money at him to bring him in. He's your missing link on defense and covers up for our needs at linebacker, and lesser needs at corner.

A good, speedy pass catcher would be nice, but if you fill up the offensive line with the right kind of players, it wouldn't be necessary. Bring a couple of killers in the run game, draft a RB or two and stick with the formula that was successful early this season.

A dominant run game and defense do well to cover up some warts in the passing game. Truthfully, it wouldn't take much to make that a reality, and they have the means to make it happen. The spotlight is on the Jones clan, but that doesn't mean they need to get stupid with the salary cap.

I don't expect anything different, might as well find some weak blended scotch and ignore the first week of free agency the same as Jerry and son

No top end (external) FA's, we'll need any Zeke (poss...Tyron/Pollard) and Dak (void/restructure) savings to re-sign our own.
If we think we're on the verge, I could see us trading (from future drafts)

jerry loves you. He's glad you think these losers will be anything but losers. Every time somebody starts a thread about how we are going to get better Satan Jones smiles.

I will give you a number .......$49,130.00M. That's Dak's cap hit next season.......are they going to eat it or restructure it? What they do will tell us a lot about Dak's future as a Cowboy over the 3-4 years.
  • No restructuring or extension, means they do NOT wanna close the OUT option at the end of the season. It's the same way they treated Zeke's out this year. They restructured a few players before the start of the season but NOT Zeke coz wanted the option of releasing/trading him.
  • Restructuring to lower the $49M hit will require giving Dak NEW guaranteed money AND UPGRADING the OUT in his contract to a few more years that he will def still be in a Cowboy uniform.
  • Remember at the end of next season, ALL of Dak's guaranteed money ( $126M ) would have been paid.
  • I can say with 100% confidence, no way in hell Dak will play a down in 2024 w/o new guarantee money from either the Cowboys or another team.

Honestly we'll know before free agency starts. If they restructure contracts and clear space then we'll know they plan on beign active during free agency. If they're not then we'll be one and done again in the playoffs

Praying for option #1. Sometimes you have to take a few steps back to go forward. I know this franchise has been going backwards for the past 28 years but I do not think Dak is our franchise QB of the future. Need to move on as soon as possible. Many QB's could have duplicated Dak's performance this past Sunday night.

It's exactly what the Eagles did when they decided to move on from Wentz.....took the hit and moved on.
