Will Trey Lance get significant snaps in 2023? Count me with those who think so

Speculation on my part, but seems to me we should look for Lance to get some short yardage duty with regularity.

And too, I think this probably makes certain that McKeon makes the team, and will line-up with some regularity as a backfield blocker.

Not a chance. The only way that happens is if things go terribly wrong. Even then I think they know throwing him to the wolves isn't the route to go. He demonstrated that in SanFran.

Maybe need to clarify "significant" since all these responses so far seem to be taking the OP to the extreme...

No with a capital N... I'm not suggesting he'll get significant snaps in any role other than short yardage.

But he will get a lot of those snaps.

We've been having a lot of discussion all preseason about who our short yardage back will be, and there's been valid suggestion that we should expect Dak to be that... but there's been valid suggestion in response to that, that there's a concern with doing that too much and subjecting QB1 to substantial punishment that way.

Lance gives McC a Taysom Hill alternative to bring in. I absolutely think that's part of the thinking here.

He might get a few gadget plays but barring injury he’s not gonna get many games he’s even active

Only way he plays is if Dak and Rush are injured.
Only way he’s active much is because someone is injured. He’s not gonna be the backup and you aren’t gonna have 3 QB active very often if any

I think it makes it more likely that McKeon doesn't make the team, just the PS. Got to cut somewhere to keep a third QB.

He'll get to go to games, though, as the emergency QB under the new rules where he doesn't count against the game-day roster. Could only come into the game, though, if the top two QBs are injured.

This is a terrible trade. At least they only gave up a 4th. I don't even think he will see playing time this year.

I hear that.

I'm going with the idea that you've got Rush as the primary long-term backup if Dak's hurt for multiple games, and/but otherwise he's your #3.

Lance is a weapon. Right now. Not as a passer so much, sure, but in that specific role in short yardage, and it's a "significant" role. He's the day-of back-up, and gets the call to finish a game if it's a blow-out (...which is one way he gets more development, oh by the way... ) or if Dak's hurt.

I don't do much predicting. But I like the odds on this one. Just watched what he did versus DEN last week... you gotta use this guy.

I am interested in Lance as a game-day short-yardage option. I agree that if Dak were hurt, Rush would be the starter for now because our record with him supports that. But I also agree that Lance could be active on game days for a specific role that Rush cannot provide. Could be interesting.
