Will Trey Lance get significant snaps in 2023? Count me with those who think so

The 49ers gave up the farm for him and gave up on him so fast for Mr. Irrelevant and Sam Darnold. Lance isn't even as good as Rush.
What part of that means that he's "awful?"

Purdy isn't so irrelevant anymore by practically anyone's measure. Darnold, based on what I'm understanding from the Eisen show, has seriously impressed Shanahan; called him a potential HoF talent or something like that. Rush has his limitations, but he's also a winner.

But/and, my second point in that previous post... which has been my main point... remains intact. Taysom Hill was/is not a good QB. But for the role he was asked under Payton to fulfill, he was a weapon.

Lance is a weapon.

If Dak or Rush is hurt, he could suit up on game day as the #2 QB. Then there are three ways he gets in the game. First, at the end of a blowout. Second, the starter also gets injured. Third, if it's Cooper who's starting because Dak is hurt, I could actually see them building in some plays for him.

Well, it's good that I have a little company in taking my position... :) ...

The problem with that theory is you're using a third roster spot on game day for a QB. The "emergency" 3rd QB can't be used as a gadget guy. The emergency QB only plays if the first two are hurt/ejected. He has to be fully active for the game to be a gadget guy so that takes away another roster spot. Unless he's got a significant role that's unlikely. Add to it that he's being introduced to a new system two weeks before kick off...I don't think so.

Of course, if Dak or Rush gets injured that's a different story. Just not necessarily a good one in 2023.

Speculation on my part, but seems to me we should look for Lance to get some short yardage duty with regularity.

And too, I think this probably makes certain that McKeon makes the team, and will line-up with some regularity as a backfield blocker.
If anything it will be gradual.

Nobody on the coaching staff thought they would get a piece of clay to mold.

Right. But review the post just above yours, and you'll see my theory is slightly but importantly different... and I'll just say it... perfectly :) reasonable.

I'll be shocked if Jerry doesn't push the coaches to experiment at some point with some RPO or special package stuff.

Don't think it will persist.

Nope, not even close to ready. Dak and Rush would have to get injured first. There may be a package or three with him but it won’t be many plays overall. He needs to sit in the QB room and soak it up.
In order for him to be used in a package or three he would have to be on the game day roster which won't happen if Dak and Rush are healthy. He will surely be a game day scratch. The game day roster only allows 48 players to dress.

Jake is making a key point here for anyone thinking we can use Lance in special packages.

Taysom Hill works because part-time QB is only one of the things he does. Hill plays multiple special teams (has blocked punts). He plays some tight tend. So he is doing a lot of different things to justify his game-day roster spot.

Going to bed. The only substantive point that's been made to challenge the original point is that you don't want to have a 3rd QB on the gameday roster since you don't have to. And my response? I agree. But/and that just means you live with having Lance available to finish a game instead of Rush. By accepting that trade off, you enjoy the significant benefit of being able to have Lance be your short-yardage guy instead of submitting QB1 to the punishment that goes with that job... and, sure, defense has to still respect the fact that he's a legitimate QB who can complete passes.

G'nite.

And Wil Grier, I hope the team rises up in a big way for you tomorrow night and sends you out with an exceptional highlight reel. Yes, even though you're a Mountaineer, a school I've loathed virtually all of my life. :)

I doubt he'll get any meaningful snaps. Unless we're up by 40 points and it's garbage time. I agree with the overall consensus that he doesn't play unless Dak or Rush gets injured.

The only snaps I see him getting this season is RPOs in short yardage. But I'm hoping against that because I don't want to have 3 active QBs on game day. I just assume have another offensive linemen or LBer being active then Lance for a gadget play.

I'm thinking this is more of an investment in the future unless he wows everyone away at practice, which is unlikely.

So my guess is less than 10 snaps barring catastrophic injuries.

It will probably be after the bye but I could see a short yardage package with Deuce, Pollard and Lance with three of the tight ends.

I saw your previous posts, and none of them addressed the point I made in mine (which you chose to clip when quoting me).

This post of yours doesn't address my point either. You seem to be missing it, or choosing to ignore it. Either way, it exists.

I agree but my play or three would definitely come much later in the season if he shows something in practice on special packages. Obviously, he couldn’t be named the 3rd emergency QB, would just have to dress him while another position loses a spot.

My money would be on zero plays this season though.

Jerry would approve and maybe even get off on this idea.

I really don't want to see Lance trying to throw it to 5'5" Vaughn.

I think they'll just flip Lance for a 7th rd pick.

This is a Jerry/Stephen trade. I don’t think the coaches had anything to do with this. This about Dak leverage. The Joneses don’t want to give Dak a second big contract. I guarantee it will come out soon that the Cowboys offered Dak an extension but he refused it. Dak’s days are numbered.

Maybe that's a part of the motivation from the FO.

If I was Dak I wouldn't be too worried about it. Jones folded w/Zeke contracts, folded with Martin...he'll lose on the extension with Dak. Lance isn't close to competing with Prescott.

$5 million cap hit next year for Trey. Guaranteed. That part of things is starting to sour in my belly when I think of this trade.

If Trey Lance is thrown into the starting position this season, then it will mean the Cowboys were having a horrible season and it just doesn't matter anymore.
