Will we be dead last in defense this season?

I don't think this current FO will ever figure things out. They are too obsessed with rolling the dice in hopes that they will find a player with massive upside that they can pay pennies for. Cannot grasp that not overthinking something is the way to go.
Damn good point. Not mentioned enough.

Last year we were the 2nd worst defense in the league. We just spent our only premium pick on offense when there were a number of good DTs available. The board is clamoring to spend the rest of the picks....on offense. Jerry spent bottom dollar on a bunch of FA rejects.

Is no one else concerned by the thought of having to watch our defense get abused week after week after week?
While taking a quick glance at the thread title and not reading the entire title at that time....I almost assumed it said "will we all be dead before the Cowboys win another SuperBowl".

 SMH why even bother when all you see is a lost season?

I was pounding the table for them to take one of these stud 1Ts but they didn't do it with anyone I had on my radar. But I still think this defense is better than it was last year. And IMO last year was a mainly just a fluke. There are a ton of very good football players on this defense. They will be middle of the pack, at the very worst. I see top 12
They consistently undervalue that position and then wonder why their rush defense is so terrible.

I'm with you on this and to add, those players getting paid pennies are there to surround the higher paid players who help fill the seats and give unknowing fans hope vs putting together a complete team where the objective is to actually win something.

I need to see Jayden Daniels do it again before I will be convinced he is the real deal. I think Washington's defense is getting better though.

Every year I think the Giants did some things to get better and every year they look just as bad. For a team that is constantly drafting at the top of each round it is amazing they never show signs of improvement. But I do think they had a nice draft and I think they will be better this year. QB is still a problem for them and I don't think Jackson Dart is the answer.

For the Eagles to be as good as they were last year they will need a few guys who had good years last season to repeat that. I don't think they will. I do think they are the class of the NFC east but well see if they hold together like they did last year.

The Cowboys will be a bit better because some guys who gt hurt last year will be back. Dak, Sam Williams, Bland, and maybe Diggs at some point. But it is not enough. The DL is still a weak point. They need a WR to emerge on offense. They need Guyton to emerge on the OL, and they need Steele to play like he did at the end of last season. Too many ifs. And they need to stay healthy.

I think Dallas could win up in the basement of the NFC East, but more likely they will finish behind the Eagles and Commanders.

I have questions about the very heart of our D… DTs and MLB specifically

We have some nice edge players, and I think pass rush will be really, really good. But can we stop the run consistently enough to put teams behind the chains?

Secondary is full of talent and question marks. Way too many variables to know what that unit will look like due to injuries and adjusting to a new scheme.

Lol maybe there was a double meaning there and I didn't even realize it.

7 Defensive Players currently on the IR. 5 not even scheduled back until Aug 1 - meaning no OTA's and probably little to no Training Camp.

Those 5 include Bell, Diggs, Overshown, Williams and the new guy Revel.

Does anyone really expect those 5 of 11 players on defense to even be close to 100% on game 1? Think they matter?

Does anyone think a new defensive scheme and coaching staff will just magically make all the necessary adjustments to assure Day 1 proficiency?

This team is going to struggle on defense....

That's all mostly true, but reality is with Micah getting hurt and missing significant time, Diggs missing a lot of the season and not healthy when he did play, Bland hurt, Overshown hurt, and then having an offense with Dak out and playing poorly when he did play, there wasn't much chance the D would be anything but awful.

The defense won't be great, but fact is, all our guys get hurt again and Dak doesn't player better, no draft or FA moves are going to matter.

Context is missing here. The defense was blown up with injuries, AND the offense was a 3 and out machine leaving the defense on the field more. Stats don't always tell the story.

It looked to me like the defensive coach (Quinn) bailed the staff was so short handed by design from the front office. It was a rebuild organically as Fisher calls it. It think we're stronger but how would I know

Will the DT play be good enough? That will always be the question. Osa is a decent starter but I don't know if there is another level his game can get to. The recent Super Bowl winners all had a stud DT...not just decent but great!

2024 Eagles - Jalen Carter
2019/2022/2023 Chiefs - Chris Jones
2021 Rams - Aaron Donald
2020 Bucs - Vita Vea

Great point. There’s only one position on the field they under value more than the DT position. It baffles me how they’ve put no stock in that position since 8 retired.

Now look at who the Cowboys have had at that position during those years and ask yourself why this team cannot figure out how to draft DT or why they choose to ignore the position?

That is a great point. Just decent is not good enough at that position.

Really nice detailed post.
Appreciate ya.

Crazy drops from the last 3 years
Defense goes from top 3-5 to 31
Dak goes from top 5-10 to top 20
