headlines, and now Canty drawing praise from the Tuna as well as Jim Burt, Do you think Spears will have additional motivation to kick it in high gear and keep it there. The only problem I read about Spears, is that he has a tendency to be lazy. I'm hoping that with Canty and Ware playing lights out, and with the verbal leadership of Burnett, that Spears will also dominate.

FYI, Burnett is a true leader. Michael Irvin type - very very intense on the field...

I think Spears will have lost alot of ground on everybody with his injuries and Dallas will be slow to bring him back into the lineup this season..especially if they get good play from the rest.

As far as motivation..he seems pretty well motivated, but he's got some real problems to repair..4 injuries to overcome in one play. I would think rehab will be his prime motivation at this point and just getting back on the field.

So often when they say 4-6 weeks..it ends up being more than that..that's usually the soonest he could return just recovering from the knee problems.

His injuries should have benched him for the season. We got lucky.

I wouldn't worry about Spears and I think we are all going to have to be patient with wanting to see him play.

And I don't think Dallas is counting on him being full-speed until mid-season at this point..although they won't say that. But who knows. Look what happened with JuJo last year and how he recovered and played well.

Spears definitely took plays off in college. I have a feeling those days are over though.

He'll be fine.

I sure hope so.

BP smply won't tolerate it, not in practice and certainly not in the games.

PW,

I'm not really concerned about the injury(s). I'm leaning more toward his intensity. Every report I read and from what I've heard, he has the talent to be the best overall DE in this draft. I've also heard and read that he has taken plays off and has not been as dominant as he should with all the talent he has.

Agreed. If he Spears plays up to his talent, he will be unblockable.

agreed, BP wont allow Spears to get lazy, BP will help speras become domiant, nothing to worry about

I agree. I rmember Keith Hamilton of the Giants was known for taking plays off in college, but when he got to the pros and things were more challenging, he kicked it into gear and became a very good pro. I think with Parcells on his *** and the competition he will have for playing time, Spears won't be taking many plays off. The guy was flat out dominant when he had his motor running in college. I think he'll really start to make some plays as the season progresses.

He was there best player, so he probably played every down and got tired at times. He will be in better shape here than he was there...plus he will be in a rotation here and play less plays per game.

All of those factors should mean that he will be playing 100% every play...

And of course, on top of that, BP will be watching him like a hawk !

I like the Tuna as a back stop, but I hope Spears has enough pride about himself to want to be the best player on that side of the ball. I'm hoping that with Ware and Canty grabbing the early headlines, that he flashes on the scene whenever his return is. I just hope that Ware and Canty are motivating him right now... I'm not worried or concerned. The guy has the talent to be all world.

I'm sure BP can light a fire under his but. But I think BP has his hands full with Flo. If Spears can light his own fire, thats one less player that BP has to light.

I've heard that and read that too, but of all Marcus's college games, I have yet to see him be lazy or take plays off on the field. Heck there were times this year that he literally saved our team... he looked like the only one out there who was STILL playing to his full ability. If someone can give me legitimate examples of when he did that, I'd be glad to review the tapes and see. I don't believe everything I hear or read.

Regardless... I think his injury and the press that Ware and Canty are getting WILL motivate him. Marcus is the kind of guy to take challenges like this and turn them around to improve his game.

i'm kinda concerned about how the injuries will affect the weight and conditioning of spears.

also the nagging nature of groin injuries.

but i'm not worried about the young man's motivation.

it's a blessing that the Cowboys have eggs in so many different baskets along the D-line.

Amy -
I don't have game tapes and I didn't see all the games. In a conversation with Lenord Little, he mentioned that Spears has a rep for taking plays off. Thats where I got my info. I'm not advocating what Lenord had to say. We talked about the Boyz and our draft. He thinks that Ware will be the real deal. He said Ware is a speed rusher like him. He also said that Burnett is a true leader, not surprising since they both played at TN. He said Burnett will surprise a lot of people. A real intense guy. He thought Spears was a good player, with good tools. His only knock on Spears was he did not always keep his motor running.

Thats just what I heard.

FYI, Little also said that JJ and Witten are the real deal.

I hope that helps...

I watched him a couple of times in college. He never really showed much interest in pursuing plays that were away from him. I'm not sure it made much of a difference, since he doesn't have the closing speed to chase down RBs and QBs. Still it was kind of galling to watch him standing around while the ball was still in the vicinity.

Watching Pollack and Spears was like night and day. Pollack would take himself way out of the play, but he would always hustle back to get back into the thick of things. Sometimes it paid off, and sometimes it didn't.

FYI, I'm a fan of Marcus and I don't wont this to come across as bashing, as I'm certainly not. I think he has the tools to be really special.

I thinik Burnett is benefitting the most from all the early hype surrounding Canty, Spears, Ware. No one is talking about him and he is just learning his job and playing hard. People will be talking about Burnett very soon - esp. after the 1st pre-season game.

I think some of the problem may have always been his weight and endurance. Saban told BP that Marcus needs to play around 285-290.
