Witten calls John Phillips RKG

Re-Watch the dolphins game....where witten ran into everybody on the sideline...you clearly hear him say

"Get the **** back!!!" with intensity....

For the camera hes a nice guy, and I am sure over all he is too...but if pissed off behind closed doors he will go off...

Remember the report a while back...when Garret got mad at a false start in practice?? He told Witten to come to the bench...and sent Marty B in...he told Marty B to get his *** back to the bench, he ain't coming out.

He has fire, and attitude....you don't have to carry on like TO to be known as such

Bro, they don't want to learn what leadership really is they just want to armchair quarterback.

We might almost be approaching another time where we need Frozen700's Instructions That Are Vital To Your Health. :laugh1:

As much as I want it to be true the Phillips can bring a dimension like NE has, I have to ask, if that is the case why wasn't he our#2 last year? If that is the case why were we after Kellen Davis so hard?

I don't think Witten is saying Phillips is as talented as NE's tight ends, but simply that he brings the versatility to give different tight end looks.

You always want to pursue the best talent at every position, which is why you do everything possible to develop someone like Marty B, but guys who do not have the best talent sometimes turn out better simply because they understand all the nuances of doing their job.

Yeah but can he play football? The reports out of minicamps were not too glowing for him.

There were plenty of "glowing" reports and one main dissenter, Calvin Watkins.

For some reason, a lot of people seem to have latched on to what Watkins said instead of the others, even though Watkins rarely seems to know what he's talking about.

Here's a good example of that from minicamp tweets:

Bryan Broaddus
John Phillips continue to make plays down the field. Running much better and playing with confidence.

Calvin Watkins
I'm down on John Phillips right now.

Bryan Broaddus
Was wondering if my buddy @calvinwatkins has seen the last two Phillips plays? Maybe down on Dez too?

Carlos A. Mendez
John Phillips having a good practice. Catching all. Screen. Long pass at goal line. Adjusted to throw to his trailing shoulder from McGee.

Todd Archer
Phillips did have a drop in that sequence.

Calvin Watkins
I just don't see the love behind John Phillips. He made a dumb move on a pick by Lee. He hit Lee in the neck.

Calvin Watkins
u don't hit ur best player in the neck during offseason practices. Stupid.

Bryan Broaddus
Geez everyone is getting hit in the d*** neck. It's a football practice.

Mr. RKG couldn't beat out Marty B. What does that tell you?

It tells me you need to read things like this:

This ascension to Jason Witten's backup was almost put in motion in 2010. Phillips was having an excellent training camp and an even better Hall of Fame Game before he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

His season was over before it could begin and the lockout of 2011 left him rehabbing mostly away from the team.

"When you have an injury like that, you can't really get better in the offseason," Phillips said. "You're worrying about getting it back to where it was. Instead of getting better and stronger, you're trying to just get back. This offseason, I got back to squatting and strengthening my legs in general."

Phillips finished last year with 15 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. Bennett caught 17 passes for 144 yards and no touchdowns.

RKG coach speak that to me is irrelevant. All I want to know is if the person can play football.

John Phillips has cought a TD in the playoffs. I think the kid cane play football.

That Marty was a better inline blocker.

If that's the absolute reason, that's pretty bad.

Marty wasn't going to contribute in the passing game, ever.

The fact that Dallas would only prioritize blocking from a TE and nothing else after having made versatility from that position so important speaks volumes on how awful the OL was.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Phillips become one of our go to receivers this year.

With our question marks at 3rd WR I could see him pulling in 30 or so passes and being our 4th leading receiver.

That you weren't paying close attention to our TE position group.

If this were true, why is he here and Bennett was allowed to walk? They were used differently. Perhaps you didn't notice that Phillips actually scored and only had 2 fewer receptions. On top of this he has Romo's confidence. Before his injury he was threatening to beat Bennett out already.

From an ESPN post:

"You see New England with all the different tight ends looks that they did," Witten said. "I think that just puts pressure on the defense. That's something we get by having John Phillips in the game. Whatever he's asked, he does it. He's just a right kind of guy. You need more guys like that on your team. I know it makes my job easier, and it makes it easier on Tony (Romo) because he knows exactly where guys like that are going to be."

If I were a media guy, I would interpret this as Witten taking a shot at MartyB.

Nice job taking something positive and trying to conjur up something negative from it.

I've largely withheld replying to some of your more negative posts so far, but c'mon... are you really as jaded as you present yourself to be on these boards? Man, I hope some of it is just an act.

Optimism and positivity not allowed until the Cowboys, one and all, prove themselves worthy to think and speak in such terms? Really?!! Seems overly harsh to me.

Lighten up, if at all possible. Just a suggestion. Sorry if preachy, but...

Not to take sides at all, but the "RKG" stuff is a bit silly. Its just a simpleton term used by JG to try to relate what he's looking for to all the media types and casual fans. Im already sick of the term myself.

Love this exchange haha. Broaddus owning Calvin here.

I get what you're saying. And to each his own about the RKG stuff. What got me was more the 2nd part of the quote I replied to. Just hit me as pretty jaded.

Do people really get to the point of "All I want to know is..." about the Cowboys? Maybe so. I can't relate. Thought I was seeing a consistent pattern of negativity by Kingsmith88 is all.

Coulda just been a figure of speech and I overreacted. IDK? I'm back on my meds now, so I feel calmer today. ;)

Been a Phillips fan since his first season. I think this guy could be close to what they thought Marty B could be. Close, not the same.

Marty B had some things. If he had Witten's work ethic he would have been greatness. Instead he is a two-cent head.

Phillips has the work ethic. He just doesn't have the talent.

But he is a very nice compliment to Witten.
