Witten must Really want to play! **merged**

That's one tough SOB. He's everything you want in a football player. If he was faster he might be God in a Cowboys uniform.

I'm going to wait until 4 O clock today to get some news or i'm going to have to cut Titus Young for a TE in my fantasy league :(

Sucks he isn't playing but John Phillips just needs to go out there and act like he is Jason Witten for 4 quarters.

Yeah, but it's not like he has a serious condition like a MIGRAINE or something.

How badly does Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten want to play against the New York Giants in the NFL season opener on Wednesday night?

Witten has informed the team he is willing to sign a medical waiver that would not hold the Cowboys or team doctors liable in case he re-injured his lacerated spleen during the NFC East matchup, according to team sources.

Signing a waiver is something he has persistently proposed since he suffered the injury, however, the team will not accept any waiver as a path to Witten playing in the game, the sources said.

Witten's toughness has fast become legendary. You'd probably be hard pressed to find a tougher Cowboy in our history.

I'd rather he just sit this game out and maybe the next.

Yes, he's tough, no doubt, but if he is not 100% and goes out there and re-injures the spleen (or injures it further) and has to miss multiple games, that won't help the team one bit.

Maybe he plays and comes out fine. But he's such a big part of the offense, not just for his blocking and pass catching but for the attention he draws that helps the run game and receivers.

I wanna see him play but at the same time... dunno where I stand on this one haha

This is truly one of those cases where you just trust the medical staff. If it's simply a pain-tolerance thing, there's no doubt Witten will be out there tonight. But if there's a chance that spleen is worsened with a hit tonight, the team will probably continue to sit him out, and understandably so. You're absolutely right; you can't risk a guy's season or career just to have him on the field in Week 1 of the regular season.

Jason's too tough to see that big picture, but the team is certainly aware of it.

Damn. Now I have to get a Witten jersey.

There is a fine line between tough and stupid.

Witten is trying to cross it.

A signed waiver doesn't really mean anything either, especially if the Cowboys own medical staff doesn't clear him. They have a responsibility that lies outside of Witten's own desire to play.

that's why he's going straight to the ring of honor when he retires.

His wife is probably behind the scenes telling the Cowboys she will sue them if they let him play!

I just hope some of the younger Cowboys see how much this means to a guy like Witten.

I personally want him to continue healing. If he plays, he might as well put a big red target over his spleen because the defense will be trying to literally kill him.

GREATLY admire his toughness and willingness to play, but absolutely do not want him risking the entire season on this one game.

Here's where I'm curious: what exactly does "game-time" decision mean in this instance? Wasn't the CT scan going to dictate whether or not he could play? Can the results change at all between yesterday and game time tonight? Or are we just being coy.

If we had 52 others like him we would go 16-0 every year.
