In reading about Heap's new contract and looking at his best season stat wise, I wondered what all the fuss is about, is he that good....Boatload of TE's in the game that post stats similar or better to Heap, Gonzo, Gates, McMichael....am I missing something...we seem to have a very good, maybe great one in Witten, to be honest I seem as a better player...call me a homer, but we found our Novacek, finally!!!

Is Witten better than Heap??? injuries aside....

The price gets higher every year for contracts I guess.

I think he is among the upper ranks of TE's of the league....However I also think that among the Ravens offense....Heap and Lewis seem to be the only playmakers they have gotten that have panned out for them to a degree.

So maybe they like him enough, feel they can not lose him and decided to pay the extra money to keep him.

Who knows.

Right. Plus, I think Heap is a good guy and teammate, probably the type of player that teams want... so that probably upped his value to the Ravens as well.

Witten doesn't have the same pedigree as Gonzo, Heap, or Shockey and didn't dominate a playoff passing offense like Antonio Gates did.

To the powers that report things and make players popular, Witten's just a former 3rd round pick who had a kick-butt year on a 6-10 team. His personality isn't flashy and his size and receiving skills don't overwhelm defenders enough to be considered highlight material. Witten just gets open and does his job.

We football fans know he's one of the top TE's in the country. The neglect is even worse for Alge Crumpler. The guy is a dominant player who does nothing but make plays and blow past people. Fortunately the pro-bowl got it right this year and put Crumpler and Witten in Hawaii.

And that was only because Shockey has such a crappy year. If he has even a decent year, he's got enough hype to get him in the probowl.

Witten might very well be considered better than Heap by the middle of this year......but at this point, he's probably not. While Heap's numbers aren't exactly what you'd expect for someone of his "elite" status.......you have to watch him play to appreciate his impact. He has been the only real receiving threat on the Ravens since he got there and they haven't really had any consistent QB play in that time. He is one of the toughest matchups at the TE position in the league and he's what d Coordinators have to gameplan for in the Ravens passing game (when healthy).

But, Witten is part of the new crop of young and talented TE's that have entered the league recently and are beginning to revitalize the position.

I look for a reshuffling of how the league's TE's are ranked this year with some players like Witten, McMichael, Ben Watson, Alge Crumpler, Shockey (he needs to re-establish himself) and Dallas Clark joining Gonzalez, Gates and Heap as the game changers at the TE position. Heath Miller also has a chance to be special for Pittsburgh.

I think Witten is better but I don't see a huge seperation. I've seen Heap make some very athletic grabs but I like Witten.

Witten to me is a blue-collar worker thats gets the job done. Dependable on and off the field. Will make that hard catch to keep the drive alive.

As bad as Vinny T was, Boller is worse. You cannot fault Heap for having one of the most inept QBs in the last decade....

Witten is still better though :D

Were it not for Boller, Baltimore would be a serious Superbowl contender. With Derrick Mason, Jamal Lewis, and Heap in place they have what it takes offensively and we all know about their defense.

Personally I don't put Gates in the elite status quite yet either. If ranking their is only one truly top tier TE and that is Gonzo. He has consistently put up the great stats and for me consistency is the key.

Top Tier - Gonzo

Second Tier - Gates, Whitten, Shockey, Crumpler, Heap, Wiggins, McMichael

Third Tier - Watson, Graham, Franks

Alot of guys on the cusp of stepping up and moving into that elite status, but they need to show more than 1 season of great play. Gonzo earned his position as the league's premiere TE by putting together multiple seasons as the best in the league.

I'm a big fan of Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhitten! :D

although Whiggens is pretty underrated too.

Fhranks is getting old.

I like this TE discussion. Good stuff, IMO.

They both seem to work well in traffic. Heap seems to be better at getting to the second level faster. Witten tends to struggle with that at times. I love Heap's hand-eye coordination.

Gonzo is just a freak. He is damn near the complete package. Gates, like TG, was an accomplished college basketball player and seems to post up DBs, especially in the redzone. He is very good at it. And the kid makes some dazzling grabs, going after the ball in the air.

All of these kids are waaaay tough covers. They're my top four TEs with Witten having a good chance at becoming as good as any. I love his talent.

Is it not possible that Heap was just the dump off guy for the inept Boller?
