I've been to Mexico a couple of times the last few years since my girlfriend is Mexican and we visit her family a lot. I'm going back there in January and i'm not really that worried, most of the country is not that bad. I would not set foot in Juarez or Monterrey and there are certain rules you have to follow in Mexico city about where you go and what you do but apart from the border areas (which might be the most dangerous place in the world) it's no worse then any other latin countries

Maybe my experiences are worse than others, but IMO the fact that you have to even compare Mexico to "other latin countries" is indicative of a real problem.

The world would be a better place without the vast majority of Mexico. Just an awful society down there. It's very easy to understand why so many people are desperate to get across the border and escape that hellhole.

Problem is. They bring the Hell hole with them.

The US Government needs to get a handle on this. It's getting bad and will only get worse.

I think eventually we are going to have to use our military on the cartels...

I agree. It's only going to get worse. And personally, I would rather see our military in Mexico helping their Gov to make their country safe for their people (who can then be shipped from ours back home), than us in the ME. We need to do something soon before it gets too late.

Some do, some don't. To be completely honest Mexico needs foreign intervention, but such intervention is impossible in today's politically correct society. So, we will continue to watch as Mexico rots. It's very sad, but nobody has the spine to stand up and say "Your country blows, we're gonna change it whether you like it or not".

I guess what irks me is what I see here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. There are sections of town that only cater to HISPANIC people. From a business owner POV, why would you want to target a small segment of the population? I see many Mexicans that have come over here, but absolutely REFUSE to assimilate. I am all for keeping your culture, but if you move to another country, you must adapt and acclimate to THAT culture as well.
you would think so but we cater to them because all we care about is their money. If I went to Greece and I went a restaurant and expected them to have a menu in english and got all put off when they didn't and then asked them if anybody spoke english to translate for me and they didn't have anybody and then looked at them like they were stupid (all the while talking to them in english but obviously understanding some of what they are saying and never even attempting to speak with them in their language) I would expect to get punched in the head

Another thing about this whole situation that bothers me. I agree, 100%.

Yeah, the retired parents of a good friend of mine spend 6 months a year in Mexico and they love it. They pull in over $200k a year, so they could easily spend those 6 months in Florida or something but they prefer Mexico.

They said that it's not unlike being in any other big city, common sense goes a long way. That being said, they do live in a gated community. His father said that they pretty much fight amongst themselves. This was all surprising to me since every story I hear is mass graves and getting killed brutally for just walking down the street. Not sure which version to believe.

I wouldn't live there. The government has no control over these guys. It's Pablo Escobar 2.0 down there. There is so much corruption and killing that I can't see why anyone would want to go there.

My wife and I have already decided that we will not return to Mexico.

What is taking place in Mexico right now resembles that of Columbia in the late 80's and early 90's. With US help things quieted down in Columbia as both local and US brought down the king pin Pablo Escobar. It will take a true commitment by Mexico and a helping hand by the US to get this situation under control

Mexico is great. The border is not so great. The drug cartels control the border towns in Mexico and they are violent. Those talking about vacationing in Mexico are not talking about going to the border towns, they go to the resort towns. Those places are wonderful.

That is becoming a bit less true now. Granted Border towns is where most of the violence occurs but it is starting to hit more popular tourist areas

While many of Mexico’s tourist areas have remained separate from the bouts of drug violence buffeting the country, the popular resort city of Acapulco has emerged as one of the new hot spots of organized crime.

A bloody week in which more than two dozen people were killed, and five decapitated bodies were found around the city, is the latest marker of Acapulco’s decline.

Cancun sucks. :laugh2: I freaking hate that place.

Now, Playa del Carmen is nice. Some of the nicest beaches on the planet. I like Cozumel, but that is because I love diving and snorkeling. They don't have any really nice hotels though.

I wouldn't want to live there either, I'm just relaying what I've heard. According to them, the vast majority of the cartels violence is aimed at other cartel members. Sometimes innocent people get caught in the cross fire, but usually its gang members killing other gang members.

When people say "Mexico is a hellhole" though, I don't think that's a fair assessment.

True but kidnapping is also a profitable business. I would say the best thing to do before you take a trip to Mexico is get info from the US state department travel site. It gives you good information and locations of where you need to go should you need help

Going there late January for a wedding, heard it's boring and just like any Mediterranean resort town in Europe not really looking forward to it, but since we'll be down south i'll get a chance to go to Chichen Itza something i've been wanting to do forever so it should be pretty cool
