Let's see. The women get far more attention than the North American tournament that the men are playing in (or even the extremely competitive Copa America). The women now have the #1 selling soccer jersey by a huge margin (https://www.espn.com/soccer/fifa-wo...jersey-sales-soaring-for-uswntsetting-records). Young women and girls across this country want to be like Megan Rapinoe (lord knows my girls love her).

Yet they are still getting paid WAY less than the men and have to sue U.S. Soccer to get any attention on the issue.

US Soccer sells both as a package.

But please tell me how the men generate more viewing. On a football board, there is a thread about the women's team.... despite the fact that the men are in the semis tonight in the Gold Cup. If you've seen any Gold Cup coverage, you would know that US Soccer is putting zero resources into it - they are actually announcing the game over someone else's feed - they can't bring up replays etc. Pretty clear who is making the money for US Soccer right now.

Well to be fair, thats not a good comparison. GC is a joke.

I would think it comes down to who generates more money for US Soccer.

If the women make more, then pay then accordingly...and not for nothin' I'd rather watch the women play - yes its a "slower" game but the girls play much smarter.

Clearly the women are driving jersey sales. That's already evidence that they are making more. They also have to play far more friendlies than the men ... and more games overall in tournaments because they are actually good and don't get eliminated early (or miss the World Cup).

For a bit of history. US Men's World Cup:
2018 Did not qualify, 2014 Eliminated Round of 16, 2010 Eliminated Round of 16, 2006 Did not advance past group stage, 2002 Quarter Final, 1998 Did not advance past group stage. Have not qualified for the Olympics since 1988

US Women's world cup.
2019 advanced to final, 2015 Champion, 2011 2nd Place, 2007 3rd, 2003 3rd, 1999 Champion. Four Olympic Gold and one Silver since 1998.

Yet they get paid less?

Something doesn't seem right with those revenue numbers.

As good as the women's team is they still drew over 10k less people a game in 2018. 24k to 14k

Take out the level of success for a moment. The men's game as a whole(not just the US) makes more money than the women's game does. There is far more money involved for the Men's World Cup than the Women's World Cup. That money filters down to the participating countries and teams. FOX purchased the rights to cover the World Cup and basically the rights for the Women's World Cup was thrown in for free(exaggeration). France won the 2018 WC and that squad split $38 million in prize money. All 24 teams in the Women's World Cup will split a total of $30 million dollars(double than the last WWC) with this year's champion getting $4 million.

While the money is trending upwards for the women's game it still lags behind the men. I do think the USWNT deserve a raise based on the level of success they consistently achieve. They are deserving of a higher percentage of the revenue they bring in than the percentage of revenue that the men's squad garners.

It is a strange deal because it isn't just based on the level of success each team achieves. Saying they deserve the exact same pay or even more because they are better is oversimplifying the matter. Where the money comes from matters? It does seem pretty straight forward that the Women's squad deserve more money. We would need an exact breakdown of revenue streams and expenditures to determine just how much of a raise they are warranted.
