I like Garrett as the HC, but he seems to get attached to certain players.

Leary was really good last year. And Free was very good in the run game and solid in pass protection.
I hold Leary to that standard because he's young and played at such a high level last season. Even in the season prior, he was stout in pass protection. This year he is noticeably slow off the ball and with his footwork and loses his leverage too easily.
Free seems to lack endurance. And the fact is that he needs to have some help in order to be productive...usually from Witten or Hanna.
I think we are seeing the same issue that Cleveland has had despite having a top notch O-Line. If you don't have playmakers then you're not going to be effective even if you had an O-Line consisting of Anthony Munoz, John Hannah, Dwight Stephenson, Larry Allen and Art Shell.

Yeah the big three on the line looked good. Problem was Free and Leary were liabilities yet again. Collins will be an upgrade. Not much we can do about Free right now though.

good thing that parenthetical included the word "joke"
The main point is that I don't think they made him any type of offer because they were dead set on retaining Free. I think Garrett was the main person "standing on the table" to retain Free. I like Garrett as the HC, but he seems to get attached to certain players. He went on and on defending Weed after they made the announcement that Cassel was going to be the starter.
Anything you hear Garrett say in public has to be taken with a grain of salt. He almost never says anything negative about a player publicly. Privately, I imagine he takes a much different stance. He may have been the driving force behind resigning Free, but it also may just have been the organization preferring him over Parnell. I would have been fine had they let Free go and kept Parnell, especially with Free's injury. Haven't watched much of Jax. How's Parnell doing?
