CowboysZone ULTIMATE Fan
Ben Muth of Football Outsiders is focusing on the Cowboys' O-line this year (as well as the Eagles and Bengals). Here's his article on our Week 1 performance (with lots of pretty pictures):
The Cowboys seem to have a running identity in mind. They want to use a lot of single-back sets with two tight ends and run the zone stretch. I always like when you can watch a team and identify some concepts they want to hang their hat on. It makes it seem like there’s a definite plan and direction. The problem in Dallas is that the Cowboys looked awful running the zone stretch, and I’m not sure their personnel is a good fit for what they want to do.
...
I thought there were some very encouraging signs up front for the Cowboys despite this. They played as a unit in pass protection. The Giants ran a fair amount of games Sunday night, and the Cowboys line did a nice job of passing them off between each other. If you recall my preview for the Cowboys in the preseason, my biggest concern was how disjointed the line looked at times. There were just too many unforced errors where guys would simply let rushers go thinking someone else was responsible for them. It’s too hard to protect the quarterback as it is; you can’t add to it by making mental lapses. On Sunday, Dallas looked like a much more cohesive unit.

Smith will be and ALL-PRO one day and a model LT for all the young tackles coming in to learn from.

Loved the breakdown of that blitz pick-up.........I never realized how important of a position Center was.

And loved this line when talking about Tyron:

He is a volleyball away from nailing a Tom Hanks impression.

Damn, I never thought I would get so pumped up after an article about offensive line play. Plug in Waters and let's eat.

Well maybe, just maybe, Tyron is finally stepping up and making us forget about Watt.

It was real encouraging to see him locked on JPP all night and just lock him down, Giants fans will probably say JPP wasn't 100% but either way Tyron dominated him all night. During the game they were zeroing in on Tyron during the telecast, and thats the way to set a guy up for a Probowl Madden style.

Now we need to get Waters in here and go to work.

JPP wasn't even close to 100%.

Fantastic article. Really informative on how the line functions. Hopefully Smith can continue to develop even further and earn himself a nice big second contract when the time comes.

JPP wasn't even close to 100%.

He wasn't in peak game shape, but I don't think he was that far from being 100%. He was able to do everything he normally does, but the endurance was probably lacking and probably had some mental blocks. As a Giants fan-writer mentioned, it took him a little more than half way through the 2nd quarter before we saw a completely uninhibited rush. Tuck concurred that it took JPP a while to 'free himself'.

As Garrett likes to say put one good day in after another, this applies to Smith, he grows like Dez each day, week, year. Applies to each of our young recent draft choices. Even average players are good on very good teams.

I would say that too if I just got owned! So what about his injury. If he was good enough to play then he was better than whomever was behind him, presumably at 100%
What are you talking about? How was I owned? I wasn't playing in the game.

Could be true. Hard to judge after one game.

JPP's situation reminds me of Haley's. Back issues that everybody thought rest and rehab would fix but he just never did get back to what he was before. I could see that with JPP as well. They are similar body types. Like you say, to early to tell but it's been more then one game now. This goes back into 2011. He's had some issues.
