I start working at Subway today and I was wondering if anyone had any experience working there. I am just doing it for a summer job as I am only taking part time classes at college over the summer. So love it? Hate it? Any input? The manager said it was the 2nd or 3rd busiest Subway in the city (Columbus, Oh) so I anticipate being busy.

I have a nephew that works there. I have seen him complain about some of the customers being jerks but other than that, I guess he likes it ok. He says there is a man that comes in and doesn't want him making his sandwich. He demands that the girl working with him do it.

As far as customer relations is concerned I'm totally fine with that. I guess I have what some would call a unique ability to be **** on by customers and still have a smile on my face. I can let them be complete jerks and be yes sir or yes ma'am the whole way. I just have patience and am able to let it go in one ear and out the other. Hopefully that is the toughest aspect of working there.

Here is a tip:

When the same customer comes in, and does not care that the sandwich he/she is ordering is $5, do not constantly remind him/her that it is not a $5 footlong.

Good for you, that will serve you well no matter where you work, or who you are around.

I worked at Blimpie when I was in college. I liked working there. It was probably the healthiest food spot I worked at ever. I also liked being able to fix different types of sandwiches and pay half price.

If Subway is anything like Blimpie, you will have lots of downtime, after the lunch rush. So my suggestion is stay on top of your prep and keep your area clean so you can get out of there at your appropriate time.

When i worked the Helpdesk at one company I had the most fun with the yellers, the people really pissed off man. They call up yelling I would just start asking technical questions in a flat monotone voice. they keep yelling and I would never respond just ask questions and you could actually hear them kind of stutter and try to answer a question :lmao:. All they really want is someone to sympathize with them, or argue with them and here I am being a ******* in a monotone voice asking questions that made their headspin.

I would think the fact you will not be dealing with greasy fired foods it will not be that bad.

I love Subway and eat there a few times each week.

Keep the station CLEAN for crying out loud. I hate seeing my sandwich dragged through other ingredients I never ordered.

Be quick and courteous and make excellent sandwiches. Talk to your customers a bit. I hate bump on the log CS.

Toasted?

Pickles?

Mustard?

Just clean the damn knife before you cut a sandwich in half. I've walked out several times after someone cut my sandwich in half with a knife that had mayonnaise and who knows what else on it. That's so disgusting.

That's an excellent ability to have.

This. Exactly.

Agreed. It's the one thing I don't like about Subway. They never seem to remember to do this. I always make sure and tell them before they cut mine. I'm not a jerk about it, and in general if I forget to say something I won't say something to them about it.

Unless it's mayo. I hate mayo.

Can't stand it.

I have had them remake my sandwhich before because they got mayo on it from not cleaning the knife. It's not the nicest thing to do, ask them to remake it because of that, but I simply don't want any mayo, anywhere, on my subs.

That's like my local Chipotle telling me that guacamole is extra every time. Drives me nuts!

I was always good at keeping my cool as long as they were paying. The company that I worked for would have me train new hires for that reason. When dealing with the public, that ability will take you far.

Please do not share any trade secrets or goings on behind that counter.

I can eat a subway sandwich every now and then and don't care to be informed about anything I don't see.

Thanks for all the input everyone :laugh2:. It was actually an awesome first day. Very easy and yes lots of downtime post lunch rush. Working in an italian deli for 7 years and also attending 2 years of culinary school has prepared me well for this.
