Worst Cowboys HC since we won a championship?

Campo wasn't good but he was given a poor roster, terrible drafts and bad asset management by Jerry Jones(Galloway trade) which stripped the team of two first rounders.

I thought Gailey got the short stick big time here.
Garrett was given a decade to build the team with a decent core to start with and managed two wins in the post season.

Phillips was a breath of fresh air for the team post Parcells but he was too lax + Garrett over his shoulders and Jerry was overruling Phillips on fines etc.

Bad coaches in no order: Campo Phillips
Average coaches in no order: Switzer, Garrett, Gailey
Decent: Parcells

I respect Parcells and Phillips a lot. Now Phillips may not be HC material but he's a great DC and might of been a good HC except possibly the GM became an impediment ... (ya think?). Besides, Phillips went to HS with my sister and was QB at my old HS so I like him fer that too..

really its switzers fault that his best players ie MI fumbles twice and I cant remember was it a INt or smoothing that put the team in a 21-0 hole? how is the HOF Jimmy Players make those mistakes because of switzer LOL but its jimmy s 3rd SB trophy the next season not switzers..you cant have it both ways.. hypocrisy at its finest..

Some also conveniently forget how the Cowboys were looking in that 2nd BUF game until James Washington made the D play of the season. Without that play, I don't think they win that game because BUF was a streaker, let them get on a roll and they were unstoppable. The Cowboys were flat in that game and Washington deserved the MVP.

This is an interesting topic that can really be looked at in multiple ways. I think Campo is the worst head coach hire on that list. Hiring him was a joke but the team as a whole was a joke during that time. He had nothing to work with. Having said that, Garrett is without question the most frustrating coaching tenure in team history. He wasted more talent and good opportunities on his stubbornly outdated scheme and philosophy but what made it the worst was that he was so entrenched with Jerry that it lasted twice as long as it should have. I can’t put him below Campo as an overall coach because he did have some good years but I would take a short disaster like Campo leading to hiring a real coach like Parcells over a long frustrating tenure like Garrett’s that wasted a very talented roster year after year after year.

Not much was made of it, but I don't think Aikman was a big fan of Gailey and his system.

Of course your franchise QB has the influence to get a HC fired, but then Troy quit a year later, and Jerry probably had his regrets thereafter about cutting Gailey loose.

Looking back, Gailey would have been gone before long anyway. No shot that any coach could have won w the Campo rosters. Take a look at some of those drafts and it's easy to see how those teams were bad.

A lot of factors involved here. As with coaches from other teams also.

Campo had nothing on the team as to talent, except what was left with Emmitt and a few other players. Larry Allen was one. I don't even think Landry or Billichick or Knoll, Shula, could have won with those teams. Landry had a better 1988 team and only went 3-13.

Switzer, many say he won with Jimmy's team, however he did win. Red Miller took over for the Broncos and took them to SB 12, only to lose to Landry. He did nothing after that, Miller that is.

Parcells was as good for the team as he was bad.

Wade was just there, he was on the right path, but then something happened, they fell apart.

Then enter Garrett, I won't elaborate, as it has been discussed was too much.

Gailey, he inherited an aging team and into the scary cap era that no one knew how to handle at the time.

While we’ve had one constant leading Cowboys Football since our last championship , we’ve had 6 different HC’s unable to take us back to a Super Bowl or even a championship appearance .

How would you rank them during this time frame.

Here’s my order of worst Cowboys HC during this stretch:
Campo
Switzer
Phillips
Gailey
Garrett
Parcells

Not sure how we could place anyone but Campo with the 3 straight 5-11 seasons on the bottom. And Switzer left a mess of the dynasty Jimmy built. Wade left a mess of the team Bill had built. Gailey could possibly be ranked 2nd above Garrett as he probably did as much as anyone with what he had left . Jerry even admits cut him loose too soon.

The reason I rank Garrett that high is based on his record , division titles and playoff wins which the latter two are more than the rest combined. Despite his coaching flaws and dysfunctional situation he helped steer our franchise in a better direction and has helped influence this roster in a greater position to contend.

One of the best measurement of coaching despite records is have you left the team in a better position than when you took over. There’s only 3 HC in Jerry’s era which meet that criteria. Jimmy, Bill and Jason.

The worst was Garrett, those other 5 HC's, combined, didn't make in game mistakes to match his.

In all of the games I've watched, a considerable number, Garrett coached the worst Cowboys game ever in ATL when he was totally unprepared for a possible failing of his backup LT. It took him over a half to make any adjustments and that is just fundamental coaching 101 when you have a back up starting his first game. To make this worse, it was an away game against a team fighting for it's survival returning home, the single most dangerous opponent in the game.

He should have been fired on the field and given a bus ticket home.

Garrett was horrific. Yes, part of it was that he wasn't ready and was saddled w/ a horrific GM, but he was still terrible even w/ that under consideration.

Campo had no talent whatsoever and cant be properly judged because of it. Garrett had the most talent and the most time and was the biggest failure out of all of them. Garrett 100% is the worst coach and its not even close. I would take Campo or any of them over the horrid Garrett.

I was never a big supporter of Garrett’s game day coaching ability which was obviously not a strength of his. But if we’re going to use records and the influence assembling talent he has to be placed closer to the top than bottom. We won’t know until McCarthy results have come in if we should have done more with what he had. That’s still subjective.

Good question. Probably cause of Jerry’s meddling and distractions from dysfunctional situation.

Id look for McCarthy to improve on 8-8 but ultimately he’ll need to improve on the results in 2016 and 2018 and overcome Jerry. Something the rest of these coaches aren’t able to accomplish.

I think he did the worst job because he didn't understand the difference in pro players and his comment regarding treating the players like grown men showed it. That team was already out of control behind the scenes but he wouldn't recognize that any more than he did at OU. The white house and Irvin's white lines were already running wild.

That team was sheer talent, the only one I could equate it to was the 70's Steelers. I don't know what all they did for extracurricular activities but they showed up on game day.
