1989-93.....the splits are somewhat mind boggleing if you think about it.
The 1/15 Cowboys in 89......and winning in Washington...
The splits in 91 and 92.....probably the two best Cowboy teams ever assembled and could only manage a split. Those alone make strong statements to the intensity of the rivalry between the two teams.
The Commander / Cowboy games many have been classics.....it has been fun.
I think the 1991 Commanders team was the greatest team we've ever had. We were ranked 1st in pts scored, 2nd in pts allowed, 4th in total offense, and 3rd in total defense that year! Balanced and dominant on both sides of the ball, 14-2 and our only legitimate loss that season was against the Cowboys, when Jimmy Johnson had the "you don't hit a bear with a stick you have to club it" or something to that effect. (We lost the last game of the season to the Eagles at the Vet with our key players resting).
I remember an unexpected onside kick in that game and the Cowboys playing as if they had nothing to lose, even though the Commanders were 11-0 and Cowboys 6-5 with fading wild card chances going into that game. The Cowboys wound up winning 5 straight to make the playoffs, winning a wild card game, then we all know what happened from 1992-1995.
I truly believe the 1991 win the Cowboys had against the Commanders helped spark the dynasty...just as our 1990 playoff win against Buddy Ryans Eagles (after the infamous "body bag game" sparked the 1991 season.
