Would Jerry Threaten To Use The Franchise Tag On Romo?...

I know some may disagree with my thoughts on this subject, but Matt Mosley mentioned something in his column today that caught my attention.

After a conversation with Romo, Mosley said this in his column..."Romo has a tremendous amount of loyalty to the Cowboys because they thought enough of his upside to keep extending his contract. But loyalty has its boundaries. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has indicated that Romo's not going anywhere, but it would behoove him to take care of Romo sooner rather than later."

Now go back to Sunday night and if you recall Madden mentioned the same thing. He said something along the lines of it's time to sign Romo to a big contract and it wouldn't be right for Jerry to use the franchise tag on Romo. Michaels said that Jerry could use the franchise tag on Romo for 2 years. In response, Madden said Jerry is a smart man and he doesn't believe Jerry will play that card.

I'm beginning to think that for leverage in the negotiations, Jerry has mentioned the use of the franchise tag in his conversations with Romo's agent and Romo is now getting the word out through the media that he doesn't want any part of it.

I am NOT saying I think Jerry is going to let Romo get away. I am of the firm belief a long term deal will get done. I am saying I wouldn't be surprised if there are negotiations going on between Jerry, Stephen and Romo's agent and Romo is privately telling guys like Madden and Mosley that he wants a long term deal for fair market value and he doesn't want Jerry to play games with him or, for leverage in the negotiations, threaten the use the franchise tag on him.

As Madden said during the Sunday night game, when that lame scenario was brought up, "I wouldn't play with Romo that way."

For once, that windbag Madden was on the mark.

Franchise money will be around 12 mil a year, but lack the big guaranteed cash. Jerry has never been big on franchising anyone, and I can't see him screwing around now that he's FINALLY found his guy. I'm betting Romo continues to light it up and gets his contract before the season ends. 7 years, 84 mil, 30 guaranteed.

Where is this comming from? Has Jerry ever used the franchise tag on a player? Seems to me when Jerry wants to keep a player, he has given that player a fair to generous contract and locked him up.

I have no fear...Jerry will get this done just like he always has. You can't deny this about Jerry: He is commited to winning and will always do what he thinks gives the team the best chance (although he isn't always right), and the man sure as heck ain't cheap.

I agree with your thoughts on Jerry. I certainly think a long term deal will get done. I just find it interesting that after talking with Romo, both Madden, (who met with Romo in pre-game production meeetings) and now Mosley, bring up the topic.

But the subject line of my post is..."Would Jerry Threaten Use of the Franchise Tag?"

Flozell got the franchise tag at one point.

The Romo contract will get done. There is still no rush. I am still thinking the end of the year, but look at the bye week as a possibility. By then Romo will have already faced the Patriots and Jerry just loves to stay in the news even if the team is not playing.

He won't do that, but that is his security blanket as he continues to allow THIS season to play out.

You don't want to allow it to get to the point where, at the end of the season he can just walk... so the Franchise tag ensures that he can't.

I think Jerry would only do it as a last resort to buy time on a new contract. However I don't think it will come to that I think Jerry knows better than anyone the importance of getting your star QB locked into a long term contract and Jerry has never been cheap

Good point, I forgot that Flozell got the tag. I still don't think Jerry will use it, although I don't know when he will pay the man.

It really doesn't matter to me. Romo has already proven his value, and he will get paid, so doing it earlier rather than later is no longer a "does he have it" type situation. I also don't think that Romo is motivated by the lack of a contract, nor do I think he will become complacent when he gets one, so that is not a factor either.

Truthfully this is something I have complete faith in Jerry, and Stephen when it comes down to it. They will get it done, and as far as all the talking heads saying it should be done now, well what do they really know. It will get done and I don't think the "when" of it is that important, beyond the fact that I don't think the franchise tag will come into play, so it will be before next years Free Agency begins.

The whole point is that if they can't get a deal done in time, JJ has the franchise option. Do you think they will just let him become a free agent and go sign somewhere else without getting any compensation? The franchise tag is the last resort but its very much in play should Romo's agent want something crazy like more than Manning got.

Nobody knows just how much work has been done on a contract, yet all this unfounded speculation just grows and grows. I can't believe for one minute that Romo has spoken to either Madden or Mosley about his contract details, or how he feels about the situation. If I am not mistaken, Romo is earning $3 million this year, a good salary for a rookie quarterback who had (has) no credentials. Tony is earning his reputation on the field this year, not as a college superstar in a major program.

I would expect Tony to be handsomely rewarded with a contract that will be on a par with his contributions this year.

I think this is an astute observation, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is right on the mark.

What's the rush, it's not like Romo can go play for a different team next week. Jerry pays for people who produces. Romo is a marketing tool for jerry. Name me a superstar who jerry hasn't paid? The deal will get done.

I'm willing to bet it's the media trying to come up with stuff that might be a little controversial, because really, there is nothing controversial to talk about with the Cowboys, we're winning, TO is happy, happy happy.....keep it moving, there's nothing to see here.

Jerry said he was going to pay him and Romo wants to stay with Dallas. There will be no franchise tag.

Romo is the lowest paid starter QB in the NFL with $1.5M salary.

Understand that Bulgar's deal is 6 years for $65M; don't know how much was guaranteed. I thought that Schobel (Texans QB) was the starting point with Bulgar's the high end but the longer Jerry wants the closer to Bulgar's deal Romo's contract will get like maybe 7 years for $80M with $25M-$30M guaranteed.

I was thinking the same thing..........7 yrs (I think that is the longest a contract can be for under the new CBA, is that right?).

$80-$85 million, $30-$35 guaranteed.

What part of Jerry saying "Romo isn't going anywhere" that people don't understand? :)
