Would Jimmy Johnson ever do a "Gibbs"?

... and come back for a second coaching term?

I am not suggesting that the Cowboys situation resembles the Commanders of 2003... I am posing this as a post-Parcells era question.

I know Jimmy has said he isn't interested, but I think Gibbs had the same reservations for several years.

People with that kind of fire rarely dim into retirement without considering another go at it.

Think about it... 2-3 years from now, Bill will probably be stepping down. The team should have a very solid core of players (assuming we are on the right track with this years' draft class). Given Jerry's committment and Stephen's new-found cap management skills, the team should be primed to be a contender. Would Jerry look to his old friend? Would Jimmy be interested?

Didn't Jimmah do his Gibbs routine already with the Dolphins? Wasn't he shown the door 63-7 ???

With Jimmy never say never but I think the odds are slim that he will ever return to the sidelines.

Never say never...although when BP finally steps down, it won't be with the fast 4-3 "D" that Jimmy likes. It will be a big and strong 3-4 "D" that BP prefers.

So, if it ever did come to pass, we would have to be changing our "D" and personel again. Rebuilding in other words.

I would look at it different in 10 years from now when the BP player are gone or retired.

I don't think Jimmy is ever returning to Dallas, he may coach again but it will not be in Dallas.

I think that is a bit mis-leading. The defense is still fast. I don't see much difference in the size of the defensive players on the team now than when Jimmy was coaching. It has been the quality of the players that went down since Jimmy left and free agency really kicked in. With the additions of Henry, Ferguson, Glenn, Spears, Canty and Ware, there is hope that the quality has gone back up.

Maybe he will go back to college. He likes following legends. He can replace Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden. He may even go back to the U. My guess is that he stays retired although if the situation is right he may consider becoming a GM.

Hard to say if the right deal came about I could see that. After all college coaches who are successful are treated like Gods by the colleges which is why some very success college coaches never wanted to leave to go to the NFL.

even if he ever come back to any team he will never be the same he used to be he was at the right time at the right place with the right staff when he was with Dallas..he is good but not super great.. J.J if he knows he can do it he would have come already.

I have believed all along that Jimmy would come back for one last hurrah.

Men like Jimmy are very very competitive by nature. And they hate to lose.

They also hate to be remembered for a failure.....which Jimmy was in Miami.

I think there's a slight chance he would come back, but only under certain circumstances. It would probably have to be a Florida team ... if Gruden or Del Rio ever stepped down or got fired.

But Dallas?

No way.

Arguably the defense is faster. Without even looking at specific players, you have 4 LB vs 3 LB and only 3 DL vs 4 DL. We all know Ware and Burnett are pretty quick too....

Jimmy is more vain than Parcells and Gibbs. What I mean by that is Jimmy loves his legacy. And I think he won't want to do anything to tarnish that legacy, which was to resurrect the Cowboys and build an elite team, a dynasty.

I think Jimmy thought he could win with Marino in Miami and when things blew up in his face, he retreated. His legacy is still in tact, but it's tarnished. And I believe he enjoys being around football, even if it's talking about it. That doesn't mean he has to be on the field.

Gibbs and Parcells are old school coaches. They love the game, love teaching the game and believe their old-school ways can work in any era. They already have their legacies, and I doubt they're concerned about "tarnishing" it even if they don't win.

At least, that's my take.

If Jerry had not hired Bill Parcells, I may have said yes to this happening at some point. However, just like Switzer and Campo hovered in the shadows of Jimmy Johnson's success (how many times have we heard, Switzer won the Super Bowl with Jimmy's team?), Jimmy would ironically fall in the shadows of Bill Parcells if he were to return to the Cowboys with Parcells team. Any failures would be Jimmy's and any successes (credit) would be Parcell's.

The ONLY way I see this possible would be if something happened to Parcell's health that caused him to retire abruptly and Jimmy could be seen as the savior of America's team.

Ego is such a powerful thing.

A better question - would Jerry ever have the nerve to call him up for a job?

Jerry does not lack the nerve but I also do not think Jerry would call Jimmy about coaching the team either.

I think Jimmy built the Cowboys in the early 90's into a dynasty for a few reasons, that he would not be able to do today.

1) Hershal trade. It will probably never be repeated. We raped the Vikings on that deal.

2) With all of those picks, Jimmy was in a great position, just coming out of the College ranks so he and his coach's had the opportunity to see and play against a lot of college players. Giving him insight as to who to draft. He has been out of College ball for years and has less knowledge now than he did back then...Current knowledge.

3) Luck, getting Emmitt Smith, who wasn't even his number 1 choice that year.

Not saying Jimmy wasn't a good coach at all, just sometimes timing and circumstances have to be looked at.

That is exactly what I have been saying for years. While he is a great judge of talent, he had a huge advantage when he came to the Cowboys because he and his coaches had already spent a lot of time scouting the players that were coming up for the draft in the first 2-3 years he coached in the NFL. Add that to inheriting Michael Irvin and lucking out on Emmitt Smith and he was all set.
