Would Jimmy Johnson ever do a "Gibbs"?

That is exactly what I have been saying for years. While he is a great judge of talent, he had a huge advantage when he came to the Cowboys because he and his coaches had already spent a lot of time scouting the players that were coming up for the draft in the first 2-3 years he coached in the NFL. Add that to inheriting Michael Irvin and lucking out on Emmitt Smith and he was all set.

Strange minds think alike Reality....

with 3 Super Bowl rings already, a nice paying gig with Fox, a sweet
life in Florida living on a boat....my guess is Jimmy would not come back to coach any team.

It's not entirely impossible. But I'm not so sure I'd want him. He didn't do so great with the Dolfins and I think he's been away from the came too long. My gut feeling is that he had advised Jerry during the 2003 draft ... of course this is just a guess ... but only one of those players turned out ...

Also, the two styles are so different, I'm not sure that Johnson could or would want to coach one of Parcells' teams. Just one example here ... look at the FB position. Jimmy Johnson loved to run the I formation offense behind a bulldozer FB ... Bill likes his FB's to be able to catch passes more than he cares how they lead blocks - seemingly.

They're just two totally different minds, but great in their own right. I wouldn't be totally against it. But I just think there are other reasons - other than the drama and the past history with the team - that he might not be as good of a fit as some might think.

On the other hand, we're talking about a guy that built a dynasty and won two Super Bowl rings.

I think Jimmy built the Cowboys in the early 90's into a dynasty for a few reasons, that he would not be able to do today.

1) Hershal trade. It will probably never be repeated. We raped the Vikings on that deal.

2) With all of those picks, Jimmy was in a great position, just coming out of the College ranks so he and his coach's had the opportunity to see and play against a lot of college players. Giving him insight as to who to draft. He has been out of College ball for years and has less knowledge now than he did back then...Current knowledge.

3) Luck, getting Emmitt Smith, who wasn't even his number 1 choice that year.

Not saying Jimmy wasn't a good coach at all, just sometimes timing and circumstances have to be looked at.

Excellent post.

2 Superbowl rings

if parcells was retired and by some miracle jimmy was willing to return to dallas for a shot at another run - i would welcome him.

but jimmy's staff is scattered to the 4 corners of football.
it might be a tall order for him to assemble anything comparable to what he had.

however, the man has a track record as a master motivator and was occasionally referred to as "trader jimmy" - in recognition of astute player moves and a keen eye for talent.

i know one thing.

we could sure do worse.

He already got a taste of coaching an NFL Florida team. If and when Bill steps down. Jimmy just might be back. I won't go making T-Shirts saying "Jimmy Is Back". I'll just wait and see what happens.

No To Any Jimmy Johnson Reruns!!!! Yes To Bob Stoops, If And When The Time Comes For New Coaching Blood!!!!!!!!!

... and come back for a second coaching term?

I am not suggesting that the Cowboys situation resembles the Commanders of 2003... I am posing this as a post-Parcells era question.

I know Jimmy has said he isn't interested, but I think Gibbs had the same reservations for several years.

People with that kind of fire rarely dim into retirement without considering another go at it.

Think about it... 2-3 years from now, Bill will probably be stepping down. The team should have a very solid core of players (assuming we are on the right track with this years' draft class). Given Jerry's committment and Stephen's new-found cap management skills, the team should be primed to be a contender. Would Jerry look to his old friend? Would Jimmy be interested?

JJ struck gold once with the Cowboys...he's a good coach, but he's no genius, and he's no HOF coach either....he lucked into some personel moves, trades, and drafts. He was a total failure in Miami, and now his boat has sailed....he'll never coach again.

Man, forget about Jimmy, he is not all that. He did a great job here, he tried to do it with Miami, but could not. He needed his same coaching same or equal to what he had and he needed the same kind of luck he had here.
He had total , I mean total control in Miami and failed.

I believe that it is this kind of mindset that will eventually drive him back for one last hoorah.

don't get me wrong. I am not disagreeing with you. He very well could have been succesful because of the talent around him.....and he very well could be a flop if he tried to return.

Your point is very well founded. And it is probablyl a point of view shared by a lot of insiders and fans because it is well founded.

And Jimmy might want to reset the foundation of his legacy.

Based on history...it would appear that the perception of his role in the success of the Cowboys of the 90's is a pretty big personal issue for him.
