I messaged one of the cowboys media people this question (BB), he thinks it's an ok idea, but the fact that there's so much in preparation to evaluate draft talent.

With our team, our motto is BUILD THROUGH the draft, I think that's a great motto to lead your team by. Then where you hit and miss, you can utilize free agency to fill in the gaps.

Please give your thoughts, it would be nice to see the league give this some consideration at least...

That sounds like a better plan for the Cowboys specifically. But JBond is right, the players wouldn't ever vote for something like that.

The NFL knows this and that's why it won't take this idea under consideration.

Gotcha!!

The players would have to agree to that and I don’t see why they would.
The vets would say no because it limits their FA money if an adequate replacement is found in the draft first. Especially the mid level players.
Yes, this was my 1st thought. The NFLPA would need to agree. and they would not.
As many players would not get offered those deals if a team got their got 1st in the draft. And the ones that did get offers, would be offered less.

Now for Dallas, yes, because of their philosophy, signing mid level to lower level FA's, to fill gaps, get depth. Then still draft in the same area, as to BPA.

The pendulum swings both ways. Currently, the advantage for teams is that if negotiations or FA targets don't work out you can draft somebody instead.

There's advantages & disadvantages either way.

Why fix something that’s not broken?

Ironically, many that follow the NBA want to copy what the NFL does --have free agency first, then the draft.

NBA 2023 Offseason Calendar
June 22nd: NBA Draft
June 30th, 6:00 pm EDT: Free Agent negotiations can begin
July 6th, 12:01pm EDT: NBA Free Agency officially begins

It won't happen because of the NFLPA. Veterans want to get paid first and drafting first could devalue certain players markets.

As been mentioned the NFLPA would never agree to it. More money thrown around when teams don't know what they have on their roster.

It would work for us since we never sign any top tier free agents and instead sign bums off the street that nobody wants anyway (warning: some sarcasm)
