it would depend on how much they offered him. if it's the same as our tender i would keep him. i think crayton is one of the top #3 guys in the league and could be a good #2 on alot of teams.he had 34 catches because of glenn and t.o. not becuase he was'nt playing well when in there.the guy has the best hands on the team and is a major weapon on 3rd downs.

Regardless of how good his hands are (and they are quite good), he isn't going to be a good #2 on a good team IMO. He's performed well at the #3 postion facing what many times is the opponents 3rd corner, a safety (see Sean Taylor), or a linebacker. I think we'd know by now if he could match up against the leagues better cornerbacks. I'm just going by what I've seen though...if he's got another gear to him, being stuck behind the likes of Glenn and Owens isn't helping his cause.

Either way, I'm taking the second rounder with a quickness.

I'd take the second round choice immediately and say thank you very much.

It will not happen though.
I agree. I like Crayton a lot, but do not see him as 1 or 2 guy. It opens more avenues to build for us. I wouldn't match.

Crayton > Hurd

Losing Crayton would immediately make our WR corps go from strong to lacking depth.

I am pretty confident we could draft another WR who could do what Crayton does. Perhaps even improve upon him.

I like the player, but he is easily replaceable.

So you are saying we should trade a productive player for a draft pick, creating a hole, and then use that draft pick to draft a player in hopes of filling that hole with less guarantee?

I like Crayton, but c'mon, the Steeler's 3rd receiver, Nate Washington, a UFA, had similar production, just 1 more reception and a higher ypc, it's not that hard finding a WR who can give you 35/36 receptions

We are going to have to draft a WR high either this year or next. I do not believe Glenn and/or Owens will be around in 2008.

So sitting pat would be a pretty silly idea. Crayton isn't starting material. Hurd, Austin and the rest are all very unproven.

We would need at least one starting quality receiver by that point. It takes at least a year or two to develop a young receiver. Crayton would be in the way of anyone we draft this year anyways.

It all goes back to whether or not you are convinced Crayton is starting material. I don't think he is and I would take steps to replenish the position with the help of the additional second round choice.

I agree.

Patrick Crayton, while likeable, isn't anything special.

Nor will he generate enough interest to get the second round choice he is tendered at. So really we are wasting our time discussing this.

I am obviously out of the loop on this one. Been too busy at work.

Is there a team that has offered Crayton a contract and is just waiting for us to match it?

What's the deal?

Like they said it is hypothetical.

A few weeks ago the Eagles were supposedly curious, but they moved on to Curtis.

Where did I praise Hurd over Crayton?

I have to say that an important member of your team is worth a 2nd round pick, even if he is not full time.

Could you replace him with a more important memeber of your team with that pick?

The draft is a crapshoot.

Just an example of our 2nd rounders for the past 8 years.
FAsano,Burnett,Rogers,A Johnson, A Gurode, T Dixon, S Page, F Adams

Only 2 of those picks, IMO has been more valuable than P Crayton.

Oops, edit,

That's probably what Miami said before NE came sniffing.

I'd take the 2nd because I suspect WR will be the best value on the board at 22 anyway, and thus will be an immediate upgrade over Crayton anyway, meaning if he stays, he'd be our 4th WR.

Since he's already gonna be 28 this year, I'd just as soon go with something like Owens - Glenn - Bowe - Hurd - Austin and take the second, and turn it into a guard, CB, or pass rusher or something.

I like Crayton more than some on this board. Having said that it would depend on who was offering. Yes to Oaklands number 2, no to Indy's.

Basically if it is a top 50 pick. With TO and Glen getting long in the tooth, Crayton is the ONE youthfull WR that we have that has contributed. The others have potential...and I have high hopes for them, but they have no skins on the wall.

Crayton is a clutch player.
