I think it depends on where you are as a team and what compensation is being offered for the player in question.If you view the team as one that is on the decline you would trade away players to a contender in order to rebuild through the draft.On the other hand if you have a team that is considered a contender you wouldn't want to trade away your core players because they are key contributors to your team.

The only time you trade your best players is when it is time to rebuild and you need the picks. See Herschal Walker trade as an example, even though that would never happen again since we have free agency now (which did not exist when the Walker trade happened).

I cannot remember a playoff team trading one of their best players IN THEIR PRIME, for future draft picks. The problem is that you are trading a guy in the top 5 at his position for a 1st rounder that could turn out to be Bobby Carpenter!!!!!
