Did you know this sets a bad precedence to others as well? Some others might look at this and say "hey, they shot one, why can't I?" The public shooting of one rhino isn't going to alter their protection one way or the other. Whatever amount they got, once divided up and how much actually goes to this, is negligible in the grand scheme of things, it will not sway the poachers one bit. Their habitat is lost because of man and there is no way to re-create it. Sure, they could possibly be relocated but their threat still remains.
How would you feel if your life was auctioned off in old age because your worth no longer exists? Put you in a cage and some hunter opens fire............
Put this rhino in a close-contact exhibit, charge people to feed and/or pet him, take pictures, whatever and use that money instead of putting on a show/bad example of killing it. Most likely, it will not be humane because it will not be killed with one shot, this is a large animal with extremely thick skin.....it will suffer.
Every little bit of money is useful. The government covers most of the expense but outside monies are needed. It's not just the life of the rhinos at stake but also the guards who risk their lives and at times loose them.
