Would you use a 2nd or 3rd on a QB?

If someone that we liked really dropped, I would be up for it...preferably after the late 2nd round.

I've seen Mocks that have Mallett dropping fairly far and others that have in in the 1st. Same with almost all of the other "2nd tier" guys after the top 2. They seem to be projecting all over the place, so maybe someone (Dalton, Laepernick, Mallett, Ponder, etc) if they are a value-steal.

IMO I think Mallett will have the best rookie season of all the QB's selected this year. He is a Joe Flacco stater kit.

I'll bet you a nickel that SDogo will ratify what I posted and his sources are different than mine.

Thank god it's likely that Dalton will be long gone by then

Highly doubt we're drafting a QB, especially in the early rounds.

And I still think McElroy will go undrafted, or go somewhere in the 7th at best.

If it were me at VR, Mallett's the only QB's I'd consider drafting because I think he has by far the best passing skill, and is by far the mroe advanced in terms of experience in a prostyle passing attack.

Mallett isn't even on my board. Two reasons, I don't want QBs with character concerns, and two. I watched him fold under pressure. The guy doesn't even come off as a leader. Reminds me of Ryan Leaf a bit. Physically, he has it. ...but he doesn't.

Actually, he is damn near a clone of Garrett in almost every sense. :laugh2:

If Dalton is there in the 3rd round and we don't take him I will buy you a steak. If we take him in the 3rd or trade up to the bottom of the 2nd like I mentioned you owe me a steak.

If he's gone before we can take him there is no bet.

You want it?

A lot of this depends, obviously, on how the Cowboys' board looks at the time a "undervalued" QB pops up.

Using Dalton as an example: say we have already gotten two very good players with our top two picks and it's now nearing the end of round 2 or early Rd 3. And there sits Dalton (or insert the guy you like). However, there also miraculously sits Brandon Harris. Well, I'm pretty sure we take Harris over any of the QBs.

Can't see the Cowboys parting ways with Kitna right now.

If you draft a QB, you are probably saying good-bye to McGee.

Under those circumstances, about the only place the Cowboys would pick a QB would be in the 2nd or 3rd round. The new guy would have to have a significantly higher upside than McGee, who hasn't looked particularly bad afterall.

NO on any QB's in the 2nd.

But a little on Dalton:

I've watched Dalton his whole career, and I don't agree with the "experts" on his projected round. He won a lot of games at TCU, but a lot of that has to do with Patterson's 4-2-5 defense that is stellar every year, and the level of competition. Dalton doesn't suck, but IMO he's on the same level with McGee coming out. 4-5th rounder for me.

Totally agree. Dalton is a nice story and a great kid, but I do not get the love he's been getting lately. It seems like his stock started skyrocketing after his combine interviews, but come on, that doesn't override his on-field ability as a QB. He simply isn't a good pro QB prospect IMO.

My money would be on McGee to eventually be a serviceable pro QB before him. McGee is bigger, a better athlete, has a better arm, and is just a good a leader as Dalton.

Plus, why would be spend a high third on a backup QB two years in a row? Big waste of resources IMO.

I'm talking about if he "gets" it, Mallett I mean. Same can be said for Jimmy Smith of Colorado. If both of these guys can keep the off the field crap at bay, then they will be the two steals of the draft.

They are clones, career backups!

That's the delimma that I see as well.
Unless you draft someone in the very late rounds (or brought them in via UDFA) it seems unlikely you would be happy putting him on your practice squad.

That about sums it up for me.

I will take average physical QB with great intangibles over a physically superior QB without great intangibles.

Look at Joe Montana. Physically, he didn't scream QB. 6'2 205lbs, but the man is arguably the greats QB in history.

If one of the top prospects was to fall that far down?
Might sound crazy, but if we're talking strictly value, you grab an OT in the first, and if someone like Andy Dalton or Christian Ponder is available, maybe pick them up.
Thoughts?

No.

No QB earlier than the 5th round. We have too many holes this year.

Absolutely everything you said is true and I'll take it a step further. Garrett will be tempted to pull the trigger where they sit in the 2nd if he is still there.

I don't doubt it, nor would I be terribly upset. If Garrett and co. think that he can be our QB after Romo, a high second is a small price to pay.

We may disagree on Peterson and you may be right and I hardly will ever say anyone is straight up wrong about something yet to happen but in this case, your straight up wrong.

Details aside, Garrett is old school. He is a visionary, he looks to the future he plans on being in Dallas for a long time and he is a former QB. One of his goals and plans is to develop HIS guy.

He loves McElroy but he is border line infatuated with Dalton. One of the two will be wearing a star on his helmet as a draft pick.

I would be very bummed if we spent the 40th pick on Andy Dalton.
But that's just me.
I see that area of the draft being where some of the real value is this year. The 40th pick is just to rich.

If that truly is the case, then that makes me worry about Garrett.

Let me ask both of you this SDogo and Hos, you've said that's what Garrett wants, but what do you guys think of his talent?

But like I said earlier, if they think he's gonna be a franchise QB, that's not rich at all. I don't know much about Dalton, but if Garrett truly believes that he will replace Romo long term then I gotta trust his judgment on that decision. And if all we have to spend on a franchise QB is a second round pick, so be it.
