Would you use a 2nd or 3rd on a QB?

Let me ask both of you this SDogo and Hos, you've said that's what Garrett wants, but what do you guys think of his talent?

I see it as just the opposite. What new coach with long term ambitions does not want to develop his own guy especially when his starter is 31 years old, his backup is 39 and his 3rd string QB is a developmental project who has shown limited ability. To me, this is yet another smart move and shows good planning and ambition.

As far as my opinion of Dalton. I would rather have Colin and I think Dalton out of Ponder, Colin, Locker and Mallet has the most development ahead of him. Then again, it's the perfect time and the perfect situation for him.

Amen to that.

Especially in the second round... What?!?

And "his guy"? Who was it that liked McGee? Wade? Please!

Silly idea, just ask the Packers and Eagles recently.

Seriously people, You state it would make question Garrett? Care to elaborate? I'm very interested in your reasoning.

I guess you're talking about using a relatively high pick on a backup QB. But did that they use a top 100 pick to do that two out of three years?

And why wouldn't it make one question Garrett? This would mean that the number one pick in the third round from just two years ago is gone before he even had a chance to develop. That's a stupid use of resources no matter how you cut it. If this were a new coach coming in who didn't like McGee, that would be one thing, but this is the same coach who advocated McGee.

Plus, like I said before, I just don't think Andy Dalton is in any way a good pro QB prospect. He's got a good head on his shoulders, but other than that he's totally unremarkable. If you were talking about a guy who you thought some day could lead you to a Superbowl, that would be one thing. But Dalton isn't that guy.

I like Dalton okay, but I'd rather go with McElroy late. But I am looking at this as a backup QB only. I do not think Garrett is with regards to Dalton. I honestly think he sees him as a starter to be developed much like GB did with Rodgers.

We may disagree on Peterson and you may be right and I hardly will ever say anyone is straight up wrong about something yet to happen but in this case, your straight up wrong.

Details aside, Garrett is old school. He is a visionary, he looks to the future he plans on being in Dallas for a long time and he is a former QB. One of his goals and plans is to develop HIS guy.

He loves McElroy but he is border line infatuated with Dalton. One of the two will be wearing a star on his helmet as a draft pick.

We'll see, I highly doubt it though unless he's just flat out decided McGee cant play.

If Dalton is there in the 3rd round and we don't take him I will buy you a steak. If we take him in the 3rd or trade up to the bottom of the 2nd like I mentioned you owe me a steak.

If he's gone before we can take him there is no bet.

You want it?

Sure why not.

But like I said earlier, if they think he's gonna be a franchise QB, that's not rich at all. I don't know much about Dalton, but if Garrett truly believes that he will replace Romo long term then I gotta trust his judgment on that decision. And if all we have to spend on a franchise QB is a second round pick, so be it.
Sure. I agree if you are very confident that someone will be your franchise QB in a few years, a 2nd rounder is worth it.

I just feel there will be many Andy Daltons available after the 1st round in the next 3-4 years, so why rush now? We have so many other needs and the draft will be loaded with 2nd round talent where we need it.

I guess if Garrett thinks he's a once in a 4-5 year QB value to be had in Rd 2, then it would be hard to argue. It just seems like an extreme man-crush to me if that's the case.

I can't see any scenario where a qb could be even close to BPA in those rounds. Some teams are going to reach for some unremarkable qbs and having three on the roster already means that we shouldn't have to be one of them.

Not this year. Magee justs needs to be good enough to become a solid #2. Then the #3 spot will be open to a developmental draft pick.

I dont' see the point for a team like the cowboys that have a true starter at QB taking a draft pick with limited upside. The #3 guy needs to have a really high ceiling.

A team like Min or Az that are desepate might be a better place for a guy like McElroy. He will not be great, but he is probably more mentally ready to play early in his career than some of the higher rated prospects. I think the same could be said about Dalton.
