Would you want the Cowboys to trade up in the 1st round for a franchise QB?

OUr #1, plus Glover and Ellis is the most I would give up. That would probably get us up to 10 or so at best.

Nope.
Any way you slice it, you build championship teams through drafting well, and then coaching well, over time. Rolling too many draft picks into a single player is a low-probability move. Much safer to take the players you can get where you find them, trading up only when the value you've placed on the player far exceeds the draft slot you can get them in.

How likely is it that any player in this draft far exceeds the value of the 2 slot? Not very.

Too many holes to fill. If we are going to make a run, we need players that can contribute next season. Now, if a qb falls to us, maybe we should look at him. But to mortgage the draft for a one player who will not be able to contribute next year, will be a bad decision.

Matt Leinart is the real deal. He is the only QB worth trading up for, either VY or Cutler will slide..

I don't get it. I read alot of bashing from many fans saying how we should have gotten a real quarterback behind Bledsoe. Well in order to get one you have to trade up. You cannot have your cake and eat it too. If we want the next Troy Aikman, than we will have to trade up period. Dallas will not have the number 1 overall pick anytime soon.

All trades to move up for a QB should be made now, for next year. Get in a position to make a move on Quinn.

i'd only do it for Vince Young. This guy just has the will to win that all the great ones had like Michael Jordan, Montana, Emmith. People see him dancing and everything and they think that this guy doesn't take things seriously but all he is doing is keeping his team calm and when its time to get on the field he is as serious n ready to play as anybody. People who compare Vince to Vick are way off as i see more of Cunningham and its not even close how much better passer Vince is at this stage than what Vick was

I haven't seen Quinn play. Is he the quarterback of Notre Dame? How would you compare him to Leinhart?

That option is there. It's the next to last one, you want to draft a QB, but not trade up for him.

Ok, I'll clarify by adding....

"and there won't be a QB worth it by the time we pick"

I basically meant that we'll have to stick with what we have. Doesn't mean we're "fine" though.

Just the best option left.

I don't buy that at all. What you are saying is that unless you have a top pick you can't get a franchise QB. There are plenty of franchise QB's taken after the first round. Recent example: Tom Brady.

Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, and Drew Henson were other examples of GMs/Owners trying to find a franchise QB out of the 1st round. ;)

Pick any round and you will find bust pick at QB.

Another even more recent example, look at the Commanders and Brunell. Given up for in Jax he put Washington in the playoffs.

I wasn't talking about fans like you who have stated many times that we should stand pat and see what we got. I was talking about people that have complained about not taking Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, and even Ben Rothlesberger and being stuck with Drew Bledsoe. The only way you have a shot at quarterbacks that highly touted out of college is to trade up. As for Tom Brady, there are not alot of undrafted free agent and 6th roung quarterbacks that make it. Brady really is an extreme case and is not the norm.

My point is that the Cowboys picked all 3 of those fellas wanting them to be a franchise QB. Tom Brady was luck, not a franchise QB pick. Bledsoe was still supposed to be a Patriot, they just lucked out and found one of the best QBs ever in the 6th round. The Cowboys spent high draft picks and salaries for Drew Henson, Quincy Carter and Chad Hutchinson but never quite went all the way and risked what they would need for a 1st round franchiser. The year they picked Carter, Michael Vick was the big 1st round QB. So, Atlanta has their franchise QB while we're still trying to find someone. Cincinnati had their veteran QB in place (Kitna) and spent a 1st rounder on QB, Carson Palmer, and whadya know, they now have a franchise QB. Pittsburgh tried to get by with guys like Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox, the same philosophy the Cowboys have used. Then they went out and spent a 1st on Ben Roethlisberger and low and behold, it looks like Cowher is finally going to win a Super Bowl. Our one good chance for a 1st round QB was Byron Leftwich, but we didn't go after him, Jacksonville did, and boom, they have a franchise QB!

Sure, there are 1st round busts at QB, but you have to take the risks, otherwise you're like the Cowboys struggling year after year at the position, and Pittsburgh before they went after Big Ben. Philly got their 1st round QB, and that's one of the big reasons why they've dominated the NFC East over the last several years, the Giants took a chance and they were in the Playoffs and look to have their QB for the next decade. Washington grabbed their guy and have him siting and learning while Brunell holds the fort down. We tried to do that with Henson, but our mistake was going for another baseball player project. You want a franchise QB, you've got to be willing to spend big. Just my two cents.

Some pretty decent late picks...Trent Green 8th, Gus Frerotte 7th, Rob Johnson 4th, Matt Hasselbeck 6th, Aaron Brooks 4th, Marc Bulger 6th, Tom Brady 6th. Don't get me wrong there are many busts on this list. But good ones can be found. Even on day 2.

Trent Green, Matt Hasselbeck and Tom Brady are the only guys on that list I consider franchise QBs, and only Brady reached his potential on the team he started with. And again, none of those guys was picked as the QB of the future. Belichick thought Bledsoe was his man for the next decade. Favre was the man in Green Bay when Hasselbeck was drafted. Stan Humphries was the man in San Diego when Green was drafted.

Again, I'm not saying you can't find a franchise QB out of the 1st, but more often than not, ESPECIALLY with the low round draft picks, it's just pure luck. Jake Delhomme wasn't signed as the starter of the Panthers, they didn't know how good he could be. Brady wasn't anything more than a backup afterthought in Belichick's mind.

If you want to find the next Aikman, you've got a draft a QB where you picked Aikman. I think we've run out of ol' Bill Parcells QBs, so it's time to prepare for the future.

Only for Vince Young.

Simply because his "flash" would tide us over until he had proven himself. I think with either of the other two we would be sitting around scratching our heads over whether this was a good trade or not for all that time.

I don't think many Falcons fans are upset that they have Vick even though they aren't winning always. Same in Philly with McNabb. Or Farve in Green Bay. Players of this stock bring excitement to fans even when the team is in a rut. Their pressence emphasises "HOPE".

Do it Jerry! Draw the gun---SHOOT!

Let's put it this way. Rather than debate who's better between Young, Leinhart, or Quinn, I'll just say I'd let 2 other people take 2 of them and I'll be happy with who's left.

Nope.

We need to at least give a legitimate chance to Romo and / Henson and see what they've got. The bottom line is nobody REALLY knows yet.

Leinart is probably the best of the draft. A real solid player.

Young is a fantastic athlete, but will have a learning curve in the NFL. Could be great, my guess is he'll be average to slightly above average.

Cutler is a riverboat gambler who has TREMENDOUS arm strength and could be great, but he's an incurable risk taker. I've watched this guy here in Knoxville as well as a couple times in Nashville...He could flourish w/ the right team.

Look out for the guy from Clemson, Whitehurst. I think he has what it takes to be a solid QB....not great, but could take a team far.
