WR Dont'e Thornton Jr: the argument for the Dallas Cowboys to draft him

“Dont'e Thornton Jr is not being talked about as much, but he has the tools and production to be just as good or better for the Dallas Cowboys”

Keep on keeping on!
Yes, as good or better than Tetairoa McMillan or Matthew Golden could as a #2 for this team. That is what this whole thread is about. I even started my opening post mentioning both T-Mac and Golden from the very beginning.

English comprehension is not your suit!

Go post elsewhere if you refuse to learn and are only here to argue nonsensical, lazy points you have because you refuse to watch included videos in this thread.
Thornton is currently 156 on the consensus big board but I’m the non sensical one…

There isn’t a video on the planet that makes him a 2nd rounder.

Did you watch the video in my opening post? Be honest.

Plus, averaging over 25 yards/catch, 6 TDs with only 26 receptions, and almost hitting 24 mph at top speed (not including his height, leaping ability, excellent hands (only 2 drops) a 131.7 QB rating when targeted, plus 81% rating running short routes, 87% intermediate routes and 92% deep routes) shows excellent potential when thrown to who can make plays at all 3 levels on the field.
With all due respect , you are a good poster... but i cant see this kid going in the second. Id be willing to bet he goes in the 4th. Ill bet you a cheeseburger. Tariff free

Thornton is a product of his offence. All of these fast guys from Tennessee don't pan out in the NFL. Tillman is the only guy who looks like he might do something from that offence, that they run over their. If he is taken with one of the 7th round picks, fine. Speed is useful, so why not gamble with a 7th. Higher than that, is pushing it.

If you want a speed guy who can run more routes, and has more nuance to his game. Lambert-Smith from Auburn looks like a guy. He can be snagged in the 5th round

If they don't go WR in the first two days he would be my target. Him or Ja'Corey Brooks, Louisville. I also like Ricky White as a Day 3 special teams option. He can return punts and is an excellent punt blocker; 4 last year.

Jackson Meeks, Syracuse in UDFA. Dude just wins on inside breaking routes. Nobody could stop him down the seam. He is underrated and should be looked at.

There has been much debate about how the Cowboys should draft Tetairoa McMillan if he drops to the Cowboys 12th pick, or taking Matthew Golden at #12, or trading down a few picks and taking him in the late teens while picking up an extra Day 2 draft pick. All solid choices.

Dont'e Thornton Jr is not being talked about as much, but he has the tools and production to be just as good or better for the Dallas Cowboys. Plus, since Dont'e is under the radar, he could easily be taken in the 2nd round while the Cowboys trade down in the 1st (while picking up an extra Day 2 pick (or two)) and using that traded down 1st round pick on either a big DT, RB, LB or CB.

Check out this video breakdown of Dont'e Thornton Jr. The video creator does an excellent job breaking down his college tape and shows how Dont'e Thornton Jr would be an even better choice to pair up with CeeDee on the Dallas Cowboys...

Tai Felton is my WR

Tai Felton is my WR

Felton is a beast. I got him in the 3/4 range, but he will probably out produce that. He is extremely physical running after the catch. His routes are crisp and his tree is extensive. For some reason, he can't or doesn't want to block. This is his main detriment. He is a Z wide out. He needs to be off the line of scrimmage at all times, press coverage in the X spot especially will give him fits.

He is a good fit for a team like Kansas City or Houston. They give a lot of motion looks that free up wideouts, instead of making them run through press coverage. He is a lackluster blocker so he will be overlooked by this coaching staff/front office. Very good player. Another team will make him a baller, in this league.

I didn't watch the video at first. Since, you mentioned it, I took the time to watch it. A very long and in depth video. The guy seems knowledgeable enough and his graphics for the play breakdowns were very nice but he is a Volunteer homer and is only accentuating his highlight plays on the season.

What does the player do when he is in a cover 2 press situation. A 2 high shell look, like all the NFL teams are running now. In most of the video he has 5-7 yards of cushion to work with. If he is pressed at the line and wins but still has a safety over the top I think he will be less effective.

He did run a few corner routes which is nice to see and I like that he continues his route after the play breaks down for his QB. However, I still think he is a Day 3 prospect. I said Round 7 earlier, but if they took him in round 5 it wouldn't be a complete waste of a pick. This team does have a serious lack of overall speed.

Tennessee runs such wide sets. Most NFL teams are going to condensed sets, like what Schotty was talking about doing. It gives a larger amount of route availability to your better WR's like CD. It also shortens the distance of the majority of throws the QB has to make.

Dak has an OK arm. All the QB's Tennessee has had with their wide set offence, under Josh Heupel; have had monster arms. They are able to make those wide set throws and can stretch out a Defense. Hendon Hooker, Joe Milton and Nico Iamaleava can make those long throws to the opposite sideline. The QB in college usually has more time to throw the ball too. Heupel has it all figured out and Kiffin is starting to run his offence the same way. The only caveat is you have to have a QB with a big enough arm and they don't grow on trees.

The big advantage with Heupel's offence. College's don't have the bodies to play strait up and win with their front 4 in most cases. If you have a dynamic runner like Sampson and also spread everyone out, it's basically cheating. In a lot of the video the opposing team is blitzing to help with the run, the corners are in 1 on 1 off coverage out of necessity. In the NFL that cheat code is expunged and the wide sets are stymied. The fronts are to strong to run on without an extra blocker or two; in most cases.

If you want a reason why they shouldn't draft a player like this. Look as far as your QB, that is reason enough.

If the Chargers or Bills draft him he might make something of himself(QB's with an arm). I don't see it with this team, but as usual it's only my opinion. I can be wrong just like everyone else.

You mentioned needing a QB with a big arm like Joe Milton. Guess which team he is on now?

Uh, huh.

Dont'e Thornton Jr would fit perfectly here in Dallas.

Brother, I believe Dont'e Thornton Jr's hands are around 9.3" in size. About average for a WR. Usually, a little bigger are preferred, but he only dropped 2 passes thrown at him last year. Pretty good hands.
Ok cool, I identified Thornton early in the process, and thought he is what Dallas needs a tall, speedy WR to take the top off and be a threat to force the defense to adjust. I had to ask about his hands because of low volume of catches and lack acknowledgement from the scouting community. I'm cool with Dallas adding in other areas and drafting Thornton and rolling with a WR2 by committe until a better crop comes thru.
