Did you watch the video in my opening post? The video creator does an excellent job breaking down Dont'e Thornton Jr.
I didn't watch the video at first. Since, you mentioned it, I took the time to watch it. A very long and in depth video. The guy seems knowledgeable enough and his graphics for the play breakdowns were very nice but he is a Volunteer homer and is only accentuating his highlight plays on the season.
What does the player do when he is in a cover 2 press situation. A 2 high shell look, like all the NFL teams are running now. In most of the video he has 5-7 yards of cushion to work with. If he is pressed at the line and wins but still has a safety over the top I think he will be less effective.
He did run a few corner routes which is nice to see and I like that he continues his route after the play breaks down for his QB. However, I still think he is a Day 3 prospect. I said Round 7 earlier, but if they took him in round 5 it wouldn't be a complete waste of a pick. This team does have a serious lack of overall speed.
Tennessee runs such wide sets. Most NFL teams are going to condensed sets, like what Schotty was talking about doing. It gives a larger amount of route availability to your better WR's like CD. It also shortens the distance of the majority of throws the QB has to make.
Dak has an OK arm. All the QB's Tennessee has had with their wide set offence, under Josh Heupel; have had monster arms. They are able to make those wide set throws and can stretch out a Defense. Hendon Hooker, Joe Milton and Nico Iamaleava can make those long throws to the opposite sideline. The QB in college usually has more time to throw the ball too. Heupel has it all figured out and Kiffin is starting to run his offence the same way. The only caveat is you have to have a QB with a big enough arm and they don't grow on trees.
The big advantage with Heupel's offence. College's don't have the bodies to play strait up and win with their front 4 in most cases. If you have a dynamic runner like Sampson and also spread everyone out, it's basically cheating. In a lot of the video the opposing team is blitzing to help with the run, the corners are in 1 on 1 off coverage out of necessity. In the NFL that cheat code is expunged and the wide sets are stymied. The fronts are to strong to run on without an extra blocker or two; in most cases.
If you want a reason why they shouldn't draft a player like this. Look as far as your QB, that is reason enough.
If the Chargers or Bills draft him he might make something of himself(QB's with an arm). I don't see it with this team, but as usual it's only my opinion. I can be wrong just like everyone else.
