Well, we have been throwing more passes to our RB's, our TE's, and our number one WR Lamb. So the lack of production by Gallup is understandable. The offense has been pretty good since Dak's return, except the two games where we didn't establish the run. If we would have had our rushing attack performing up to par against Green Bay and Jacksonville, we could have won those games.I think that's an exaggeration with regards to Gallup.
His targets per game have always varied widely.
- They use him as the deep threat to run off the coverage to open things up for other receiving options.
2021: 35 catches in 9 games
2022: 31 catches in 11 games
A difference of about 1 catch per game.
He was considered very good in 2021.
The difference is that he was #3 WR in 2021 but #2 WR in 2022; therefore expectations are higher.
In 2021, even with Cooper, CeeDee and Gallup, they got contributions from 4th/5th WRs Brown & Wilson. In 2022 they don't have contributions from #4/#5.
Obviously adding an elite WR would be a good plan for the off-season because it makes the other WRs better. i.e. Gallup is better if he moves back to being #3 even if his performance does not significantly change. The question is draft or free agency. Jerry seems intent on signing a big name but it might be best if they can hit on a WR in the draft.
So, I don't look at it as if the passing game isn't working, it's just they passes are going elsewhere now. And for a team that needs to establish the run to be competitive...I don't see late additions to our WR group making a real difference this year.
