If they arnt going to get Boldin or Williams, there's no need to add anyone IMO. Carolina is definitely not going to move Steve Smith, and Arizona has a legit chance to win the NFC West, so there is zero chance they will move Boldin. As for Holt, if the Rams dont want him and nobody wants to trade for him, whats that say? Also, he doesnt add a real big play threat to the offense either, his yds per catch the last 4 yrs are 12.8, 12.8, 13.0 and 14.6, and this yr he is at 11.1. He's a productive player, but his best days are well behind him and he is already 32.

Roy Williams is the only one that might be moved that would make sense. The Lions are sunk and need to rebuild, but they dont have to move him immediately because they could slap the franchise tag on him in the offseason and still trade him (and he will have trade value).

Bottom line, unless something bad happens to TO or Crayton, I doubt we're making a move at WR. Especially with Austin having such a strong TC, preseason and then making a big impact vs GB the other night.

i agree. there's no need to overspend on WR's now when all the cilinders are clicking. Hurd & Austin will do in the meantime. Also, Jones has said that he wants a burner opposite Owens and only Smith fits that description.

He absolutely will have value. He's a good young player with a ton of upside. They could tage him an still get a 1st rd pick or maybe a 2nd and something else, just as they could now. Several players were tagged and traded this past offseason.

I also dont know that you can claim he is "unhappy"...he's repeatedly said if he couldnt come back to Texas than he'd love to stay in Detroit

This all sounds good in theory, but there is a reason why there are so few deadline trades in the NFL. First, there's the salary cap. Second, unlike other sports, there are hundreds of pages of plays that a player has to familiarize himself with (especially for a position like WR).

Also, while avoiding a bidding war is good for us, it doesn't make any sense for the Lions not to get as much as possible in return. If I were the Lions GM, I'd hold onto Williams, franchise him (w/ every intention of trading him) and wait and see what the market demands are.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get Roy for this season, but past history tells me that there is a 99% chance of this not happening. If I am wrong, I'd happily eat crow.

For the record, of all the veteran WRs who there has been speculation about coming to Dallas, here they are in terms of who I would want most and how likely I think it is we could get them.


1. Steve Smith. Him opposite Owens would be sick. 5% chance. Carolina is good. They aren't going to trade unless unless the offer is unreal. That isn't likely.

2. Anquan Boldin. I wanted him in that Draft. I have always liked him. Once he has the ball he is hard to bring down. 10% chance. I just don't believe AZ will move him.

3. Roy Williams. My feelings about him are hardly a mystery. 80% chance. If Detroit loses next week after the bye this week, they need to look towards the future, that means stockpiling Draft picks.

4. Chad Johnson. I refuse to call him Ocho Cinco. I don't care if that is his legal name. 10% chance. Just like AZ, I don't think they will move him.

5. Torry Holt. I don't think we need a WR over 30 which is why he and Chad are at the bottom of the list. 50% chance if he is released. 5% chance we'd trade for him.

Good list if we can get RW the sooner the better IMO.

Jerry was on Norm this week, and was asked the question if we had enough money under the cap to go get a receiver if one became available. He said yes, and by Adam's last update, we have 7.3 million - plenty of room to fit him this year, and sign him in the offseason.

In terms of the playbook, I have no doubt he could learn at least some of the plays and learn the rest as he went along. The passing tree numerology (route numbers) is probably the same, he would just need to learn the formations terminology.

I won't speak for the Lions, but I haven't seen them do many things over the last 5-7 years that would lead me to believe they'll do the smart thing. Although Millen is gone, so you never know. :laugh2:

He is correct that we should let it play out right now. Maybe Austin is the real deal. How ill we know if we don't give him the chance? Hurd is finally on the field and we need to see him play. Bringing in a Williams or a Holt might improve us some, but maybe we have some real gems waiting to get a chance.

Any WR signing/trade right now would be a progress killer for this two kids. Crayton I can see replacing. He has had a chance to show he is more than a serviceable #3 receiver. He is digressing in my mind. But maybe, just maybe, we already have the #2 receiver we need on the team.

Save the money for Ware and Columbo. Let the kids have a chance.

Can Dallas afford to pay Roy Williams and resign Demarcus Ware? I think Williams doesn't look as good as he can be because of the situation in Detroit, but Ware is arguably the best defensive player in the league regardless of position.

Think about it. Sign Roy Williams and then not be able to sign Ware. Let me get back to you on that.

Would love to see Roy Williams here without giving up a #1 or #2 but I honestly think Holt would be the best fit both as a player and as a teammate and cheapest to acquire.
Although I think Crayton, Austin, and Hurd are pretty decent and could perform, I don't completely trust them come playoff time to get open and make the catch. I have no doubt that Holt would come in and be content if he caught zero passes but we won. Also, when teams double and triple Owens and Witten, I have zero doubt that Holt would always get open and always make the catch. Holt is one of the smartest receivers in the game, he has phenomenal hands, and still has some speed. In my mind, acquiring Holt would give me a lot of assurance about getting to the SB this year. R Williams would be great and exciting, but for my money, Holt is the guy that would give me the most assurance. Would seem to make more sense from a dollars and cents standpoint too, at least per my speculation. Also, I think its scary to think what would happen to our season if TO got injured again. We simply can't live without TO now and if we had to....yikes. I'm all for bringing someone in and we should've done it this past offseason.
I'd easily give up at least a 3rd or a 4th for Holt and I think Jerruh could probably get him for even less.
And frankly, right now, what WR, esp an older one who's on a dysfunctional team that may not win a game all season, wouldn't want to come play for us and possibly win a championship.
