Started a similar thread on the LB position. We have a serious logjam at WR also now with some of the UDFA talent we brought in and few roster slots available.
Who sticks?

I think the first 3 positions are stone:

1) TO
2) TG
3) Crayton

and #4 is all but locked up with Skyler Green since he will be the primary KR/PR.

The rest of the slots are pretty wide open although few if any are likely to see the field (save maybe STs) barring injury. We have some decent holdovers from last year as well as some very intriguing UDFAs. Who makes it? I hope I'm able to remember everyone in this list:

JR Tolver (seems to impress in workouts and TC)
Jameica Rector (seemed fairly well liked by the coaches last year)
Terrence Copper (made it last year, but mostly because of his ST ability)
Ahmad Merritt (I'm thinking goner)
Tom Crowder (coaches like him but can't see him making it in this crowd)
Sam Hurd (already signed to a 3 yr contract which is odd for a UDFA)
Miles Austin (pretty exciting prospect)

That's 11 dudes for maybe 6 or 7 slots. I think Hurd is a lock given his contract. I think Austin is a pretty exciting prospect too. Can't see Crowder or Merritt sticking and I think Copper is becoming a longshot.
My guess is:
TO, TG, PC, and SG with Austin, Hurd, and Tolver/Copper for the last spot.
We're going to have to cut someone decent, which is a nice change. May the best WRs win!

I like Miles Austin, Tom Crowder, and Terrance Cooper... But what they have to prove who can help the team the most...

Miles Austin:: He is someone that could be a potential starter in the future, but he has to prove he can play special teams, he have to know how to be a solid wrap-up tackler, he need to know how to return kicks and punts, and he need to learn how to contribute in reverse plays also...

Tom Crowder:: Is a fast wide receiver, he proved last preseason he can be a force on deep routes, he was a force on special teams also blocking a punt, he has to be a demon on kick-return and punt return and if he can prove that he could stay consistent he'll make the team. He needs to light up the board in NFL Europe. Crowder needs to show some in NFL Europe to help his chances at making the team.

Terrance Cooper:: I like him but, he has to show he could be consistent as a wide receiver, Cooper is a hell of a special teams player, he has to show he could block punts too, and he have to probably show the Cowboys this year he has more speed then indicated in the last past 2 years he played with the Cowboys....

Even with all of the improvements I set for these players somebody going to be on the pratice squad so that leaves me with two players that could possibly make the team.

TERRANCE COOPER

and

TOM CROWDER

Honestly I think Miles Austin will be on the practice squad unless he shows starter talent in preseason on special teams and out on offense at catching the ball.

I don't think Hurd is a lock -- what I think we did is bought him a spot on the PS -- a deal like that says "we like you -- here's some cash -- after we cut you don't answer the phone so we can put you on the PS"

good job on the top 3 lol

honestly though, i think the #5 and maybe even #4 WR are irrelevant for this offense. even when we are down and have to throw a lot it will probably be 3WR and Witten. so im going to guess that the #5 (if we keep one) will be a special teams guy. im not sure who of that last group is the best on ST, but thats who i would think will make the team

The locks are obvious: TO, Glenn, Crayton and Green.

I don't think Copper makes it this year - we now have enough good ST players in the secondary, LB and TE spots to make this position more of a developmental one for a future WR.

Crowder has shown nothing and should be a goner.

Rector seems to be a player in the mold of Skyler Green. His only shot is to convincingly beat out Green. I know they had been trying him out at DB last year too so he may be switched back again now to compete for a spot with Nate Jones.

I am guessing the developmental spot will be an open competition between Austin and Hurd who have the size that BP covets at the position. It looks like it is Hurd's job to lose given that he has already been given a 3-year deal.

Crowder is not lighting up the board over in NFLE; don't know enough about his QBs to judge whether they just not that good or whether they just not throwing to him, he's got too much coverage on him or he drops too many balls. We'll see when TC starts.

Copper our #4 WR made just 1 catch last year & don't think Crowder even got on the field. I heard Spags (either on one of his broadcasts or over NFL draft weekend) say that Merritt would have made the team last year (don't remember why didn't). Very strange we signed Hurd to 3 year deal; never heard of that before--must have had some competition from other teams to sign him. Both Parcells/Jones had good things say about Rector last year. Real interesting to see which of these UDFA newbies make PS this year & if any can make the team and what happens re Merritt, Reactor & Crowder along with the new UDFA rookies.

Wouldn't be surprised if our last draftee, E.J.Whitely, makes the team. He's athletic enough to play 5 positions, very smart--he's an honor student, believe he was a team captain & promised Parcells on the phone he would do anything they wanted him to do. Parcells told Whitely he'll play C & OG which are positions Gurode plays. No matter who wins out as our starting C, the loser won't be around next year. We also only have Peterman? as backup if Gurode beats out Johnson at C; if not, Gurode will become our 2nd backup OG but his play along with Peterman a cause for concern. Unless one of our OGs steps up (Peterman/Gurode) wouldn't be surprised to see Parcells push Whitely real hard. We'll probably keep close eye on the waiver wire or hope another team cuts a legit OG who can help us out even for us 1 year if we can sign him for decent price. There doesn't look to be much out there among FAs.

The Key thought here is "#5 (if we keep one)". with more 2 TE sets we will keep 4 or 5 at MOST wide recievers with one on the practice squad.

I agree I think the most we keep at WR will be 5

Crowder won't make the roster, the only thing he has going for him is ST ability, and he isn't going to get a WR spot just on that alone. Copper is already doing that.

I think we have enough ST "aces" that we won't have to use a roster spot on a WR whose only contribution will be ST.

I hope its Copper, I'm not exactly sure why. He only has 8 career receptions, I only remember one of them....... I'm not sure who it was against, but I remember it was 3rd down, it was a bad throw, he made a really nice snag for a first. At least he's been in the league for a couple years and is a little more seasoned. Plus, I've never seen any of those other guys play. Finally, I dont think it really matters, Green probably will be the 4th reciever and the 5th will never see the field, except for ST.

I think the #5 spot is Copper's to lose. It is great to have this many options at WR, but there are reasons most of these guys were not drafted. If the competition is even close, experience will win out. BP knows what to expect from Copper. The other guys might be good one day and bad the next. TC and Pre-season will sort it all out.

I may be mistaken, but don't all the UDFAs get three-year contracts?

The addition of Watkins will make Copper expendable as a gunner and as a gameday 5th WR which BP never like to carry amyway.

Watkins can sub in as a WR in a pinch and he will be a gunner on special teams.

4 WR carried on game day with Watkins being #5. I hope one of the new guys shows something because I am not impressed with Copper,Rector or Crowder.

I think Rector makes team and starts next year. He will surprise everyone.

Starts where? Over Glenn? or do you mean the following year 2007.

There is no way he starts over Glenn.

First, we only keep 5 WRs, anything more cuts another position on defense and that will not happen. We should get use to the idea of at least 4 TEs and possibly 5.

Can't run a two TE set and have to worry about injuries although someone like Hatcher or Spears or even Watkins could sub as a fifth TE. Watkins need to put on some weight though even for a free safety. He should be able to be around 230 and not loose any speed, the guy is as skinny as a rail.

Obvisiouly Owens, Glenn, Crayton and Green are the first 4 WRs. The fifth and practice squad will be a battle. With Austin, Hurd, Merritt, Rector, Copper, Crowder, and Tolver. To me it means 4 of them are gone.

Austin and Hurd have major upside at the moment. Training camp could see one or both fail. Copper has to provide more than just special teams to make the team this year. It is his battle to lose in training camp.

Crowder isn't showing anything in Europe so I don't expect see him even make it past the first training camp cut if he makes it that far. Merritt, Rector and Tolver will have to show major signs to be even considered.

My take is Copper makes it again with Austin and Hurd on the practice squad although I do think that Austin has a very good chance to unseat Copper. Hurd needs work and weight but will go to the practice squad.

Rector can do double duty at corner ala Troy Brown.

I don't think Crayton is a lock, he sucked at the end of the season after coming back from injury. If he plays like that, he's gone.

Rember Quincy Morgan, Peerless Price, Antonio Bryant....if you don't produce consistently, say goodbye.
